Book 1: Souragne Session 3
Chapter 3: The Strangest Funeral
General Summary
The Skeletal Figure
With Sempornia leading the way, the group encounters a creature with glowing eyes riding on the back of a skeletal horse. After attempting to hide from the undead, it spots them and attacks without mercy. After a difficult battle, the whip the skeletal figure that rode the horse falls to the group and Norikami picks it up. After the battle, Sempronia Sornatis heals Norikami. Amoiety notices that her magic does not seem to be linked to the Divine magic he is used to seeing in those with healing skills, but appears to be more Necrotic in nature. He later shares this when the group stays at the Crescent Moon Inn.The Funeral
In town, the group encounters a funeral procession of about 50 villagers following a group of six people carrying a wooden coffin bound in chains with something within scratching at the wood. A moment later, a zombie bursts out of the coffin as it is dropped to the ground. The group defends the villagers, yet the zombie keeps on raising again and again. Maria, the owner of the General Good Store, speaks with the group. She tells them that the funeral is for Constable Thomas Lebasque. She tells them that a Blight has infected the land and though it has ceased infecting their crops, it seems to have moved on to the living with the dead rising as zombies far more often and more unaccounted deaths occurring in the village. She also mentions that Thomas's son, Carlos, believes his father was murdered. If they wish to talk with Carlos or pay their respects, there will be a memorial service at the Crescent Moon Inn after the funeral. The Crescent Moon Inn
Throughout the town the group notices that many of the villages keep their own small vegetable gardens in their yard and raise small farm animals, with goats and chickens being the most common. Signs of the recent blight are seen throughout, with much of the plant life appearing withering and blackened with mold. At the Crescent Moon Inn, they notice that the stables are chained shut. The Inn is empty, yet the Innkeeper, Hennerick, is friendly towards them. The group gets some menus and eats before getting some rooms and requesting a bath. Hennerick's kids bring up the bath water and the group discusses their situation as well as what various worlds they come from. Kass, familiar with the nature of the Mists but having never left Darkon, tells them what little she knows. She knows the Mists surround different lands and are dangerous to travel through. They are also know for picking up travelers and transporting them into unknown realms purely on a whim. She also knows one cannot travel through them unaided. For example, Sempronia said she was guided by the Wizard King of Darkon, one of the most powerful, if not most powerful Wizard Kass has ever heard about. Sempronia seems to speak the local language and has a conversation with the Inn Keeper before she retires to her own room, separate from the group. There she identifies the whip for Norikami and tells him it is a magical whip that deals lightning damage upon hitting a foe.
