Book 1: Souragne Session 4

Chapter 4: His Sister's Keeper

General Summary

When the group leaves their room and enters the tavern of the Crescent Moon Inn, the Repast for Constable Thomas Lebasque is being held creating a crowded, yet somber atmosphere in the Inn. Carlos, Thomas's teenage son, is easy to spot in the crowd as many villagers are offering him condolences and bringing him food and beverages, which he barely touches. After acquiring the only empty table in the tavern and ordering a few drinks, the group discusses whether or not they want to get involved in whatever this "blight" they keep on hearing about entails. While they're enjoying their drinks and discussing potential plans, Kas notices Sempronia leave the Inn on her own.   From Hendrick, they learn that Carlos believes his father was murdered and eventually a few of them have a rather awkward conversation with Carlos. Carlos swears his father was killed because he was looking into the death of Annick Rogers. The villagers swear all the recent deaths were caused by the blight, but the Constable was growing suspicious and found an effigy made of twig and tied together with red twin upon her corpse. Carlos found a similar one on his father's body.   While they were talking, the sound of splintering wood is heard from outside. The group investigates and discovers that three zombies have busted out of the locked stable. Once they were defeated, Hennerick, the barkeep, comes outside and mourns for the loss of his sister. He was keeping the zombie of his sister in the stables in hopes to find a cure for her. He claimed that he has no idea how the other two zombies got there.   The group locks the zombie corpses back into the stables in hopes of not causing a scene, then remembers they did not check the bodies to determine who the other two were. After sneaking in through the large opening on top of the stable, they find no identifiers on the two corpses. They are wearing clothing made of a rough leather (alligator hide).   After speaking with Carlos, Norikami is convinced that the killer is after Carlos and the group insists on staying at Carlos's home for the evening to ensure he is projected. Carlos, perhaps not in his right mind or maybe in need of company , agrees to have them over for the evening.
