Eyevitis

"Eyevitis"   Also know as: "Yellow Eye"   This is an inflammation of the uveal tract, which lines the inside of the eye behind the cornea, most likely resulting from severe or repeated damage to the eyes, while in contaminated water or having the water enter the wounds just afterwards.

Transmission & Vectors

Transmission is thought to be through infected water.

Causes

The causes of Eyevitis are not fully understood, but they can be a result of trauma, allergy, or a response to a systemic or ocular disease. Eyevitis may be a type of immune response mechanism. In people with impaired immune systems, Eyevitis may be due to an infection.

Symptoms

Symptoms include yellowed eye, blurry vision, pain, redness, hair color loss, hair loss, and headaches.

Treatment

Unknown. Usually requires a healer cleric.

Prognosis

Conditions will continue to worsen over time with affects becoming more drastic at 1 week intervals. If allowed to go untreated, hair loss and vision loss will become permanent. Death due to this condition is rare.

Sequela

The more untreated time that passes, the more likely the condition leads to permanent vision and hair loss. A small percentage of afflicted individual may actually gain Darkvision.

Affected Groups

All mammalian humanoids are subject to possible infection, as well as most amphibians and avians. Reptilian humanoids are usually resistant due to thicker skin and scales.

Hosts & Carriers

Any animal can carry the disease, but mammalian humanoids are at the highest risk for infection.

Prevention

Avoid contaminated water, particularly swamps and marshy areas.

Epidemiology

Non contagious and will not be transmitted from person to person. However, those infected cannot contaminate their environment.

History

Cases of Eyevitis are rare but concentrated in swamps, mashes, fens, and stagnant water areas.

Cultural Reception

Reactions to the infected usually range from concern to avoidance, but local healers generally know of remedies and will help out the infected as there is little risk for contagion. People usually have more of an issue with where the infected person was and why they were there. Especially since it is strange for a "normal" person to be out in the fetid areas.
