Starlight Crystals
Starlight Crystals appear as beautiful, bright, sparkling, pointed crystals that are extremely brilliant and spectacular light catchers. They are highly sought after by many groups across the world for their beauty, cultural significance, and abjuration magic enhancing abilities.
Properties
Material Characteristics
The crystals have unique characteristics that not only make them bright white, but also make them translucent and extremely reflective. With a small amount of light, they seem to almost glow radiantly. Additionally these crystals are extremely smooth with sharp edges and grow in elongated, eight sided pointed shapes.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Not only very rare and beautiful, but these crystals also have the ability to harness and amplify magical energies.
Geology & Geography
This material originates somewhere in space where the rarest of asteroids collide. It is thought that these highly energetic collisions melt and resolidify these crystals. They then float in space until they occasionally crash into the planet.
History & Usage
Discovery
No one knows exactly who, when, or how these wondrous crystals were discovered, but many currently claim them as their own. Perhaps the oldest record of Starlight Crystals dates back over 9,000 years to the Star Elves themselves.
Everyday use
These magnificent crystals are often used for adorning the royalty and nobles and for the enhancement of magical items and spells.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Despite the incredibly small amount of these crystals available on the planet, many groups claim that they all belong to them and have gone to great lengths to "recover" the crystals. These recovery attempts have taken many forms throughout the years such as simple purchasing, gambling, theft, murder, and even war. The most significant claims to the crystals are as follows:
The most historic claim comes from the remote and dwindling Star Elves. They claim that their very bodies are made of stardust and that everything that comes from the stars is gifted to them by their makers. In fact their oldest and most prized possessions are adorned with these crystals. They believe that when one of them dies, their soul joins with one of the stars. They see these crystals as actual pieces of the stars and physical manifestations of their ancestors. They have gone to war several times to both acquire and defend these crystals.
Perhaps the elves greatest enemy, the orc nations, also have a deep cultural attachment to the Starlight Crystals, but in a very different way. The orcs despise the elves and as such seek to destroy everything about them. Over the millennia, their shaman and witches have dedicated the destruction of the crystals to their dark gods, as the most powerful and meaningful ways to honor their deities. Great ceremonies centered around the capture and sacrifice of the crystals have been held throughout the ages.
The exiled dwarves, who were stripped of their clan names, found a huge Starlight Crystal after wandering the barren surface for ten years. These dwarves took this as a sign from their new gods and formed a new settlement on that exact location. They took a new clan name based on what they called this crystal, and so the Skystar dwarves were born anew. They view all of these Skystar Gems as hidden gifts from their gods, that they have been tasked to find, acquire, and store by any means necessary.
In addition to various races and culture claiming these rare crystals are also many mixed groups. One such group are those spell casters that specialize in Abjuration spells. Although these crystals boost many types of magics, they seem to especially enhance those of protection and defense. Several abjuration specialist groups have been actively searching for these special crystals. Most notably of which include The Veiled Circle and The Grey Guard.
Refinement
These crystals do not require any sort of refinement processes. All that they need is to be carefully separated from the rock that they are encased in and perhaps some light cleaning.
