Janis' Jackdogs
Composition
Manpower
The Jackdogs have a standing force of 2000 Riders spread across the 4th Legion. In addition two the riders they have 3000 stable hands, and 1000 Support staff.
Equipment
Aside from normal riding equipment, Jackdog riders equip specialized harnesses that prevent them from tumbling out of their saddles during long climbs.
Due to the Goat like nature of Jackdogs, their riders also carry specialized climbing equipment.
Weaponry
The weapons favored by the skirmishing cavalry are cavalry sabers, hammers, and javelins. They prefer to harass the enemy at range, but their brutal mounts can sow chaos in loose formations of enemies in a pinch.
Vehicles
The Troop has 1500 Jackdogs and 500 horses under its command.
The support staff has 50 large wagons and 40 Conds, as well as a herd of goats for supply.
Structure
A formation of Jackdog riders consists of
Three Troops of 660 Riders and A supply company of all the support staff.
The troops are then divided into 6 Groups of ~100 Riders.
The command Troop otherwise known as 1st troop consists of three command teams that operate separately on the battlefield. In addition the 1st troop has specialty squads like scouts.
Tactics
Jackdog riders specialize in mountain based warfare, but excel in all terrains. They are specialized cavalry adept at giving generals maximum flexibility and tactical options. They run Gurrelia warfare operations when not engaged in an active battle, hiding in the hills and attacking forging parties.
During battles they can be used to great effect by flanking the enemy through normally impassable terrain. The versatile jack dog allows for riders to pass over hills and some mountains in a fraction of the time, since they do not require trails.
In combat they act as either skirmishing or melee cavalry, avoiding infantry if at all possible. They prefer to engage cavalry then jump off and fight along side their jack dog for maximum efficiency.
Training
After initial legionaries training, specially selected noblemen or extremely adept enlisted are selected to attend cavalry school. They must graduate Cavalry school at the top of their class, and serve in at least 1 campaign, before being selected. Once selected they head to the mountains in northern Dwarflund, and practice advanced riding and mountain warfare. After 6 months of practice they must tame their own jack dog. A perilous task due to two factors: Jack dogs are predators by nature, and the beasts tend to live high up mountains.
If a rider earns the loyalty of a Jackdog, then they are trained for 6 more months before being assigned to a Jackdog Troop. Jarvis' Jackdog riders have an additional level of training, where they must hunt and kill an apex predator or band of enemies on their own. While not a prerequisite, there are many privileges to those who complete such a challenge, such as the ability for promotion.
