Port Lyric is nestled between two hills at the mouth of the River Eunoë, which empties into Dubhuisge (Dove-ooshka) “Blackwater Bay". It is known as the "City of Song" or Cathair na Òran (Kah-hey no[w] Ah-rown). For thousands of years, the fey ruled the Dairbhre (Oak Grove) of the north coast. While the Eladrin of House Netheril contended with the elves of the Cabal Isles, in the grove the two kindred met to try to negotiate their differences. Cservodni of House Netheril resolved to unite the kindred by wedding the daughter of the Holly King of the Cabal Isles. Later, in a dark quest for power, Cservodni sacrificed the woman on a black oak. The Holly King vowed vengeance, and the two kindred were bitterly sundered. When the Dominium arrived, and their mages began to migrate northward to form the Confederacy of Tolaria, the Netheril turned their attention to opposing them. Eventually, due to their own internal conflicts as well as the conflict with the Confederacy, House Netheril diminished and the Confederacy established Port Lyric at the river mouth, on the hills known as Dàn Liriceach. The Eladrin had traditionally kept dwarves in virtual slavery, and the diminishing of House Netheril had freed many of these folk. The dwarves in turn had subjugated the local kobold population. These were remnants of these races that did not settle in Voltai, and so did not adopt the dragon-focused forge-culture of their Voltaic kindred. The dwarven and kobold underclasses in Port Lyric have been the source of occasional unrest. While the dwarves have leveraged their knack for crafting into a mercantile class, the kobolds have struggled and find themselves increasingly isolated, confined to a kobold ghetto within the city walls. The Confederacy finally won independence from the Dominium and the cities of Tolar, Port Lyric, and Seahold established their own schools of magic, each with a unique emphasis. In Port Lyric, the elves of the Cabal Isles agreed to terms with the humans of the Confederacy, and the colleges formed focused their study on the culture and magic of the elves.
