Shadowholds
And the dead came forth and walked …
The hubris of the empire of Atlantis knew no bounds. In their desire for conquest, they not only enslaved the populations of lands they conquered, they also enslaved their own dead. Heroes that fell in battle were raised by various arts and rites, and made to fight again for the glory of the empire. Soon the undead were legion, and demanded their own lands — apart from the living — where they could pursue their curious existence in what peace they could find in their undeath. When the empire fled the drowning isle, these legions of undead journeyed with them. They quickly claimed the wasted lands between the heartland of the Dominium and the northern frontier of the Middle Kingdoms. Their leaders dubbed themselves barons, and their new lands they called the “Shadowholds”. Beneath this land is an “echo” of the mortal world, a parallel dimension in which the natural features of the lands and seas are arranged in much the same configuration. The undead sense this echo, and here they are free to move back and forth between the dimensions.
