Discovery
The Nuclium ore was discovered by one of the now largest cities on Domu. The mountains where it can be found has long been a place for pilgrimages and the strange properties of the land there has been a mystery.
The discovery of Nuclium and its properties was the beginning of the nuclear age.
Cultural Significance and Usage
Hazards
Nuclium is highly radioactive and acidic in its unrefined state. The mountains where it is mined has a very scarce flora and fauna. Only a few species that have evolved to survive the hazardous environment is able to live there. The acidity of the ground is around 5Ph.
People who visit the mountains often get radiation poisoning. How sick they get and for how long depends on what part of the mountain they visit.
Environmental Impact
When the mining industry started the acidity became a bigger problem than the radiation. As they disturbed the soil and broke ore, acidic particles got into the air and nearby bodies water, acidifying surrounding environments.
The acidification got more problematic as the acidic water reached the nutrient lush grasslands downstream, destroying important croplands.
As the problems with acidity where discovered, solutions were found. The acidification is now more under control but damage can still be seen in some areas and some croplands has not yet returned to its former glory.
