Umbral Dagger

A relic often associated with the likes of the Umbral Sects, the dagger is as much a symbol of heresy against the Church of the Eternal Dawn as it is a deadly and magical weapon.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Made with umbral steel, the daggers ironically possess passive magical abilities that make them ideal for striking magic users.
Should a dagger penetrate a victim's flesh, the flow of mana through their body seems to cease, thus nullifying any magical effects and preventing them from casting spells. Similarly, should a dagger impale one's shadow, the victim will become paralyzed and unable to move. Fortunately, both effects reportedly end instantly once the dagger is removed.

The processes required for forging umbral steel, let alone the daggers have been lost during the Age of Dusk amid much other knowledge.

History

The daggers are thought to have been amongst the tools used by elven  warriors such as though of the Tenebran to aide in combating magic practitioners. 
Following the Age of Dusk, surviving blades were adopted by groups who saw the Dusk as a punishment from the gods for abusing magic. Said groups would form what became known as the Umbral Sects, a radical anti-magic movement. Numerous crimes would be tied to the group over the years, including murder, where use of the umbral daggers were proved to have occured.

Significance

Because of its association with and use by the Umbral Sects, the dagger is considered a sure sign of heresy and has been sufficient evidence on more than one occasion to have someone convicted and sentenced to hang.

Outside of the stores of eccentric collectors, the dagger is believed to most commonly be in the possession of an assassin under the Umbral Sects. Despite their importance and utility for those of the faith, it would be too much of a risk for anyone else in the Sects as being caught with one would automatically brand someone as a heretic.
