A Comforting Void

The black and starry view from the main gallery never really changed - not unless Shohahn picked a comfortable chair and tried to pick out constellations. Unless he took the time to really look. He was a passable navigator, could manage in a pinch if Raedhya or Trhayrh were indisposed, but that had never been the Sharshi's calling in life.   The void above was something of a comfort, though. The sense of being alone, save for his fellow sharshi he'd been around for most of his life, was peaceful. Nothing to keep an eye on, no strange phenomena to study, no odd traveler or trader to worry about. Functionally, Shohahn's job became quite easy when they were adrift like this. Cruising toward some location that Raedhya or Trhayrh had picked for one reason or another. He need only keep them informed as to their supplies, which did involve cursory checks with a couple other members... But that might as well be idle chatter during their day cycles.   The click of talons on the smooth metal walkway alerted Shohahn to company. He didn't bother to look away from the view. The slow gait and heavier steps, along with the lazy drag of a tail, told him it must be one of the mechanics. Cushions creaked as a nearby couch was claimed.   "Do you know when we will be making landfall next?"   Dahzha, then. Mechanic. Tinkerer. Someone who got restless after prolonged treks across the dark space. Shohahn tongued a fang in annoyance before he answered, "I never know."   "That's because you never ask," came the quick reply through a hissed sigh. The usual banter. Which meant Dahzha was in his usual mood.   Not up for this sort of chat, Shohahn pushed himself up and out of the chair. Intending to leave the quiet hum of the main gallery to Dahzha. Retreating rather than be drawn into whatever tiff his fellow sharshi would try to start up.   "Aww, don't be like that, Sho."   "Enjoy the stars, Dahzha," he answered, waving a hand dismissively while including the appropriate offensive gesture with two claws raised in Dahzha's direction.   "I hate the stars," came the rumbled retort to a now empty gallery.
