Farmer

Overview

Farming is the most common skilled trade in Dosjorya, especially among residents of the grassland region. Some farmers also live in cleared portions of the forests and in the lower valleys on the mountains, providing food to areas farther inland.

Lifestyle and Work

A majority of farmers live in poverty and only grow enough crops to support their household. These farmers section off their usually small fields for various foods. They keep what they think they need to feed their house and grow more crops, and sell or trade the rest for other goods. They only receive help from their families, as they cannot afford to pay laborers to help in the fields. To a farming family, having at least one son is desirable, though in most areas, men are not encouraged to force their wives to bear more children for the sake of having a son or multiple sons.
Some farmers come from rich families or their families have built their farms larger through the generations, allowing them to amass large plots of land to grow cash crops on top of food for their household. These are some of the wealthiest Dosjoryans and they supply the major cities and settlements with food. Rarely to they themselves or their families tend to the fields; common laborers work for decent compensation on these farms.
