Draena and the Wyverns ((DRAY-nah))

This is the creation myth for dragons, in particular the western dragons.

Summary

Long ago, the dragons weren't like the dragons today; they were smaller and could not wield magic. One day everything changed when a great wyvern, Wyverna or Mother Wyvern, appeared, bringing her kin along. She and her hatchlings gorged themselves on the land depleting the world's resources and leaving the dragons on the brink of starvation. The animals tried to fight back by attacking them by land, water and sky, but there was no creature that had all these skills.   No creature except the dragon. So one female dragon took up the mantle and set out to defeat Wyverna. She fought hard but was defeated, escaping into a cave to tend to her wounds. Here, she came up with a plan; she led the great wyvern deep into the cave, looped around and caused a rock slide to trap the wyvern. She succeeded with Mother Wyvern pinned by rocks and only her snout sticking out of the cave.   With their mother trapped, the wyverns lose heart and are slaughtered by the dragons. When only a few wyverns were left, Wyverna cried out to spare her children. The female dragon who defeated her agreed to stop, on the condition that her hatchlings would become so violent and stupid that they'll eventually destroy themselves before they destroy others. With the agreement struck, Mother Wyvern was released but continued to live in the cave, never flying again.   After this, the dragoness taught how to defeat the wyverns using cunning and magic. She later was named Draena, or Mother Dragon.
