Faeries
Flighty, mischievous, and mysterious, faeries inhabit the wildest parts of the world. Also called pixies, sprites, or simply fae they may be distant relatives of elves and gnomes; their sharp features, pointed ears, and small stature seeming to support this idea. Extremely small, the tallest among them do not reach a foot in height. Their most recognizable features are the pair of wings sprouting from their backs roughly between the shoulder blades. These wings are somewhat insectoid in appearance, often resembling those of bees, butterflies, or moths combined with leaves, sticks, or other plant life. They come in every color of the rainbow, though their coloration does seem dependent upon the environment in which they dwell. Forest faeries are generally green, blue, or purple, but red faeries living around the volcanoes of the Blasted Wastes have also been spotted. Next to nothing is known about their lifespans, their perpetually youthful faces do nothing to betray their age, but it is perhaps fair to assume they are very long lived when considering their distant relation to elves and gnomes. They are extremely reclusive, staying in their small, well hidden villages far from other races. They have a language, the Old Fae form of Sylvan, which has been deciphered for the Record, and is spoken by a few very old elves. Those elven speakers have been known to treat with faerie leaders on very rare occasions. Above all others they hate trolls, who seem to view them as some sort of delicacy. They also have an aversion to metal, which supposedly poisons them on contact. All that being said, the fae generally keep to themselves, repelling invaders into their territory with stone tipped spears and arrows or using their abilities to fly and turn invisible to retreat deeper into the wilds.
