Stabilizer

Dragons have long been responsible for a large part of Draconia's foundation. From the cities that litter the landscapes, the environments that house wildlife, down to the very materials used to create buildings. Draconia would be nowhere near what it was without the innovations of dragons. However, there are negatives to the existence of dragons. On occasion a dragon will either die inside of or retreat to a location congested in significant amounts of elemental power. The magical energies change the physiology of the dragon, turning it from a physical being into an elemental-like creature, still dragon, but merged with nature. This new form, dubbed a "Disaster Dragon", possesses unrivaled magical power that cannot be contained in the new body, and it escapes in the form of apocalyptic calamities.   For the longest time, these events were looked at as inevitable, an end result of dragons becoming more powerful versions of themselves. It wasn't until a group of powerful wizards found the lair of a nesting Disaster Dragon and realized that the magical energies could actually be sealed away. For seven days and six nights they fought with this magical force, attempting to quarantine it back into the elemental planes of which it originated from. On the eve of the seventh night they succeeded, whisking away the dragon and ending any potential threat that it could have posed. After returning with news of their discovery, the wizards began to train others in their schools of magic, in the process forming their own school of stabilization.

Training

Institutional Training

Becoming a Stabilizer is actually a simple task. A potential mage must only demonstrate capabilities in abjuration/defensive magic and a specialization of at least one elemental school (earth, fire, air or water). Once they have these skills, they are sent to schools in either Uzambwe or G. Central, depending on what continent they live on. Retired stabilizers from each elemental specialization live in these schools to train the potential stabilizers that are brought in.   The prospects are taught in a practical manner. Instead of learning out of textbooks, the teachers take them to live fields where potential Disaster Dragons may one day emerge. Practical teaching allows the students to understand the dangers that they will face in their future careers, while also giving them live experience with the dangers that they will one day face. While in these live exercises, the prospects learn to adapt their magic to the threats of the elements, and also learn how to adequately manipulate those elements into harmless energy that can freely merge with the rest of the world safely.   Of all the prospects that receive teaching, only one from each elemental school will graduate based on the instructor's evaluations. These students are then sent out into the field with an active Stabilizer to serve as an apprentice. The other prospects that do not graduate return to their homes and await the day that they can return to the school for another attempt at employment.

Field Training

The greenhorn Stabilizer travels with their master to any region where their skills must be utilized. Once they reach an area where surges of elemental energy have been recorded, the veteran Stabilizer allows the greenhorn to experience the full process of how a Stabilizer works. They learn how to investigate the occurrence of elemental rifts, predict where they will happen next and also connect them together to realize where they originate from.

Then, under close supervision, the greenhorn puts the live experience they received in school to the test by actually sealing the surges and rifts without aid from a teacher unless necessary. This is where the true understanding of the danger Stabilizers face begins to materialize in the minds of newbies. The elements and sheer power that can assault a person by being in such close proximity can never be truly comprehended, as they will always differ in how they manifest. One has to have an adaptive mind that can quickly react to any situation, no matter how sudden it may occur.   Once the surges and rifts are closed, the last task is to seal the culprit and dissipate their energy into the world peacefully. The greenhorn and veteran travel to the origination point to do battle with the forming Disaster Dragon. This is the only part of the process where the greenhorn is given aid immediately, rather than as a last resort. If they did not receive this aid, most rookies would never make it past their field training. The Disaster Dragons are a potent force of destruction that can kill overconfident persons, even as wyrmling dragons. Once the teacher and student significantly weaken their target, the greenhorn is given the privilege of sealing it away. If they are successful in sealing it away without aid, they become a full-fledged Stabilizer and begin to receive solo assignments. If they fail, they are either dismissed from duty if their results were universally poor or given a second chance if there is hope for redemption.   The greenhorns who die during or are dismissed after field training are replaced by other prospects that were previously sent home.
