The Great Beyond

It is said that the true origins of people lay in ruin beneath the expansive ocean of clouds, known as the Wujinde sea. Though none other than Guilong, the dragon turtle whose large webbed paws swim through the quiet atmosphere far above, knows what transpired all those centuries ago. His loyal monks have long claimed that Guilong rescued his people from earth-shattering calamity, and in his generousity allows them to live upon his shell. Only the dragons dare to swoop below the cover of the clouds; no one else has ever returned. Skeptics insist that the dragons are hiding something, that they must have caused the calamity themselves so long ago, to steal something important from the ancient people who once inhabited the lands below. Heretics fear Guilong himself was the harbinger of the apocalypse, though most do not give credence to this belief. The Guilan people have long been safe upon his back, war is rare and unneeded, as his shell's resources are plentiful. There is a plethora of healthy, thriving ecosystems amongst dozens of biomes. Even precious herbs, metals, and gems are not overly difficult to find.    Even so, that does not mean that the world is without strife, struggle, or fear. Dragons roam his back freely, much to the chagrin of some societies. Not all dragons are kind, friendly, or helpful. Some are downright a nuisance at best, and lethal scourges in places less able to protect themselves. Magic flows freely from the earth upon Guilong's back, his energy permeating the air and vibrating through nearly every living creature. Over the centuries, human bodies began to change as their very blood became infused. They began to take on animalistic traits, and many have found themselves capable of casting magic, not unlike the dragons themselves.
