Hydra

Hydras, although famous on earth, are quite rare in Draconis. They are an extremely powerful and feared Draconic with poisonous blood and a toxic breath, many of them preferring to remain hidden among the weeds and large swamp grasses.

Because of their infamy and deadliness having one even being mentioned in a nearby swamp is enough to cause a riot in the streets of a human town. I have seen the panic a hydra can cause first hand, and it is not pretty. So if you ever do find yourself in Draconis avoid swamps in any situation you find yourself.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Hydras love the swampy waters, because the mucky water helps them blend in perfectly. Their ugly brown and green scales mixed with haunting black eyes and large webbed horns is the stuff of nightmares. They have large clawed feet and necks as thick as tree trunks. Their heads are large and can sometimes blend in with the canopy of trees above the swamp.

The number of heads a hydra has varies on the region and type of hydra. Most have seven, but some have as little as two with six, nine, or even fifty heads.

However, I've heard of some debate that most hydras start out with one head, and as they age grow more heads, but I don't have any proof. From what I understand, however many heads they're born with is the number of heads they will die wtih.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

One of the most famous talents of the hydra is the ability to regrow its head. The classic "Cut off one head and two more shall take its place." I have never seen this occur, but I wouldn't be surprised if something like this were true.

Perhaps the hydra just has excellent regeneration skills, but I don't think the hydras in Draconis can regenerate their heads, especially the way the people on earth and in Draconis talk about it.

Besides possibly having incredibly quick regeneration, hydras are excellent at hiding in plain sight. Their immobility nearly as good as the Sea Serpents of the open oceans. Hydras are also known for camouflaging themselves as trees and having a quick reaction time. Snapping up their prey in less than a second.
