Jormungandr

On Earth, the name Jormungandr is a reference to Norse mythology. The tale of a leviathan-sized serpent that wraps around the world and bites its tail, a child of Loki. In this legend, when it releases its tail the end of the world, Ragnorok, happens.

In Draconis, it refers to something similar, not to the end of the world, but to the top of the world. Not to one large Sea Serpent, but to a type of large Sea Serpents. They coil into large mounds and when they wake up or shift in their sleep, they send tremors throughout the world.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Jormungandrs are on average larger than a Leviathan . They have massive heads covered with protective scales and horned webbing. Their scales are usually mistaken white and are actually quite easy to spot if one were to travel to the freezing north, but the white is actually large sheets of ice or snow that have frozen onto the Jormungandrs.

When awake their eyes are a cold icy blue and are rumored to have fangs the size of a basketball player, and a tongue that can stretch to 10ft.

But I have a feeling these are exaggerations.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Although Jormungandrs spend most of their time sleeping when they wake up they can consume whole continents of food. Usually eating like a snake does, swallowing it whole. However, unlike the snake they do not use their tongue to smell, but instead to bait prey into their mouth.

Their tongues are extremely sensitive and can be used for a variety of things, besides catching prey. Like, for example, the tongue can be the Jormungandrs "eyes" when they are in dark or murky water, sensing the vibrations in the water. It can also wrap around its prey and squeeze it to death.
