Lore of Dragonball: Infinity

The setting of Dragonball: Infinity takes place in Universe 13 of Dragonball Super, a separate and secret universe hidden from the combative structure of the 12 universe cycle by the Omniking and his angelic attendants.   Like the other universes of the Dragonball setting, Dragonball: Infinity has a hierarchy of celestial powers including its own God of Destruction, Supreme Kai, Grand Kai, Quadrant Kais, Lord Yemma, and Guardians of the various planets, as well as its own Dragonballs and their Eternal Dragons. These beings are in an order of magnitude so great and far removed that their presence and existence is virtually unknown even to the wisest mortals.   Dragonball: Infinity is a universe of its own, and thus the cast of the Dragonball Series is not present in our roleplay setting.    Likewise major events in Dragonball, Dragonball Z, and Dragonball Super have not occurred although some similarities (such as the destruction of Planet Vegeta, or the presence of Korin's Tower and its Lookout) mirror the broader strokes of the series. These are considered to be universal constant events and places that hold true regardless of what universe one finds themselves within, although the reasons for these events and the characters who inhabit these places are far different than the original series.   The Dragonball: Infinity roleplay universe boasts a much more interconnected, planetary opera between the various races and empires of its universe. In the Dragonball: Infinity setting the Earth and other planets developed space-faring technology alongside the other races and achieved galactic level civilizations at a more balanced pace than what is represented in the anime series. Technology such as lightspeed travel, scouters, and capsule technology is essentially universally available and the presence and existence of alien races are widely known and (mostly) accepted.   Conflict between the various civilizations, and galactic conquests have been major themes of several roleplay arcs, and Roleplay Admins encourage players to use these built-in elements, factions, governments and established animosities to create stories that can impact the roleplay universe and the dynamic between these forces for years to come.   The Dragonball: Infinity universe is full of threats and villains biding their time, plotting and scheming while waiting for the perfect moment to inact their plans for domination or to sow destruction. Just like the Dragonball Series there are phenomenal powers present in the universe who may threaten its very existence. Perhaps your character will be one of the brave heroes who stands against such forces of mayhem and malevolence, or... perhaps you will become them.   Characters in the Dragonball: Infinity roleplay setting come from many walks of life and from all corners of the galaxy. This site includes setting details for familiar planets established in the series as well as worlds that exist in-game on the MUD. The races of the universe are also detailed and given some unique origins and backstory, but nothing that you read here is gospel. It's up to you as a roleplayer to take what has been established, and build upon it.    If you have any questions about the lore of the setting or your character contact a Roleplay Admin through the personal note gboard on the MUD.

Creating a Character

Now that we have discussed some of the lore of the Dragonball: Infinity setting, we will delve into character creation and resources for writing a dynamic, and enjoyable character.   Creating a new character for a roleplay setting can be a daunting task to those who are just starting out, and you may or may not be aware of the some key elements that separate a great character from a mediocre one. Below are a list of questions to help you form a better vision of the character that you hope to play in the DBI roleplay universe. You don't need to have an answer for all of them, but they're good starting points if you're not sure where to begin:
  • Do you have a firm description of the character in your mind?
  • What are their typical mannerisms and attitude?
  • Do they have a goal, or an ambition?
  • Where do they come from and how has that background contributed to their personality and their beliefs?
  • What are their strengths?
  • What are their weaknesses or flaws?
  • Do they possess any mentors, or personal heroes?
  • Do they have any rivals, or a nemesis?
  • How would they (generally) react to meeting another character on the CHAT channel?
  • What are their virtues or ideals?
Hopefully after asking yourself these questions you have a more detailed image of the character you hope to play in your mind. With that character now established it's time to ask yourself what type of character you intend to play and what sort of story arc they might have. You don't have to commit to a personal arc for your character of course, and indeed, you'll likely find that by roleplaying with others on the CHAT channel your character may shape and develop in ways you never anticipated when you first created them, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have some idea in mind.   Rather than describe the types of arcs your character could take, instead we will provide several videos analyzing some of the characters from the Dragonball Series that might give you inspiration or insight into the type of arc you want to write for your character:   Lets start with the Flat Story Arc. This is the story arc that the Dragonball protagonist Goku displays throughout the course of the series. The main takeaway with this type of arc is that your character has "truth" that shapes the world around them. Unlike a positive or a negative change arc, your character isn't the one that changes but rather the world reacts and changes in response to this truth. Goku is an example of a positive flat story arc, but Frieza also has a flat story arc. The truths that these characters possess are radically different but they both have the same effect in the context of the story that is being told.   Now for the positive and the negative changes arcs. These are the types of character stories that most modern fiction fixates on. You've seen these stories thousands of times in different forms of media but some examples from Dragonball are Vegeta's positive change arc, and Zamasu's negative change arc.   There are of course many other types of arcs that a character can undergo, and you may find it difficult to write a satisfying arc for your character in our roleplaying format, but just being aware of these concepts can help you steer your character in the direction of being more rounded and dynamic on the CHAT Channel. I highly recommend reviewing the other videos in the Anatomy of Anime series by TotallyNotMark on Youtube. The fact that they focus on Dragonball Characters in particular is incredibly useful for us and our setting.   Our last piece of advice is to talk about your character with other roleplayers. Discuss your ideas. See how you can connect your story with others that are being written and become involved in the development of all the characters on the channel that you can.
