Halúdrints
The Halúdrints1 are descendants of Drints who inhabit the largest islands in the Erenere Archipelago, west of Nep Peninsula, in southeastern Dragonía. Unlike their mainland cousins, Halúdrints have domesticated cattle instead of merely following wild herds, and lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle.
These cattle were eventually domesticated and most Halúdrint societies became semi-nomadic ones, allowing the herds to graze in the jungle part of the year and then moving the animals into fenced off pastures in the highlands when the crabs appear.
Stone buildings are particularly common for the few Halúdrints who live entirely on hunting and gathering, often featuring no windows and extremely small entrances to defend the inhabitants against giant crabs.
History
Ancestors of the Halúdrints were Drints inhabiting the eastern shores of Nep Peninsula, who were less reliant on cattle than other groups and began exploring the archipelago around 18.000 b.Dr, using simple rafts. As the largest islands -especially B'Kege- were settled, the Halúdrints began introducing cattle there from the mainland, as each year the lowland jungles are infested for a while by giant crabs from the sea, forcing the people to live at higher altitudes where prey is less plentiful. These cattle were eventually domesticated and most Halúdrint societies became semi-nomadic ones, allowing the herds to graze in the jungle part of the year and then moving the animals into fenced off pastures in the highlands when the crabs appear.
Culture
Apparel
Like their mainland cousins, Halúdrints clothing is made from cow hides, though wraparound loincloths are generally more common than traditional tunics, with belts made from either leather or snakeskin. Shells, conchs, fangs and claws are often used to adorn necklaces and bracelets, with seashells widely being associated with protection against misfortune.Art
Architecture
Houses vary quite a bit between islands, from large communal houses of wood, wicker and palm-leaves where each family has its own spot; to huts made of cow hides stretched between wooden poles, clustered together; to stone houses- and fences that enclose the mountain pastures where the cattle are kept.Stone buildings are particularly common for the few Halúdrints who live entirely on hunting and gathering, often featuring no windows and extremely small entrances to defend the inhabitants against giant crabs.
Cuisine
Halúdrint diet is far more varied than that of mainlanders, featuring all sorts of endemic lizards and amphibians, insects and grubs inland as well as fish, crustaceans and shellfish along the coast, in addition to beef. Although dangerous, the enormous crabs infesting islands each year are sometimes hunted for meat as well, as even a single crab can feed an entire tribe for a day or two. Dairy is limited to a few scattered tribes, mostly in form of cheese.1Original icelandic: Halúdrintar, singular: Halúdrinti
