Hnam Perch

Óraxtap: Hnam /n̥aːm/
Ásjúrk: Tahrjúl /thaːr̥juːl/ , hrjúl /r̥juːl/
Hnam perch are relatively large fishes found primarily in the northeastern Ilkigit Sea and to lesser extent the northwestern Súrkniss Sea, off the coast of Jarrak Forest and the Sjorg Desert, respectively, where they mostly feed on algae within coral reefs.
Historically, the fishes were an important source of food for the coastal Krekkúxes living in the Sjorg Desert and, later on, Óraxes who conquered the region, but overfishing brought the hnam perch close to extinction in the Súrkniss Sea, similar to the Apjy Tuna. Unlike the latter, the population has only moderately recovered since the fall of the Órax Empire, though it's still highly sought after by the western Krekkúxes and Órax commoners, who consider the perch a delicacy, and a key ingredient for making a spiced broth known as hnamhrarp.

Cultural significance

Ásjúrk-speaking Krekkúxes in the southwestern desert believe that the hnam perch's peculiar burnt appearance is due to the fish having swallowed the sun long ago, only to spit it out again as it felt the sun searing it from the inside. They say that the yellow and white markings mostly seen on the fins and tail are all that's left of the fish's original complexion.
