Meðas

Meðas1 are relatively large, flightless birds found throughout the great plains of northern Dragonía. Though they occasionally eat small rodents and lizards whenever given the chance, meðas mostly use their sense of smell to find carcasses out on the plains, and are never far away whenever a plague strikes or a battle rages among the Mörkels and Þrihaks. Mörkels in particular associate the birds with disease and ill omens, and generally avoid them as a result.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Meðas are similar to other flightless birds on the plains like Rekan Birds and Förns, such as having lock neck and legs, and lacking wings completely. The females are noticeably larger than the males, but otherwise they look the same.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Meðas are found throughout the Plain of Kings, Þrihakía and most of the Plain of Spirits.

Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Dark red plumage covers most of the body, except for white white fluff at the base of the neck, which is otherwise bald along with the head, both to ease digging into carcasses and to regulate body temperature. Orange wattles are located on both sides of the head, below the eyes. Both the beak and feet are grey.
