Viridian

Viridian is a metal smelted from Viridium, most notable for its reaction in the presence of Drakesblood. Due to its properties, Viridian is most often used to make Witching Bells.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Once forged, Viridian is a blue-grey metallic alloy with an iridescent green shine, and often quite cold to the touch. Well polished examples of Viridian often take on a blue-grey colour, giving the material its name, and often lending Witching Bells their distinctive colour and appearance.

Physical & Chemical Properties

The most notable feature of Viridian (and to a lesser extent, Viridium) is that it resonates in the presence of magical forces. Normally, this vibration would be slight and unnoticeable other than the material beginning to heat up, becoming warm to the touch; in the presence of especially strong magical energy, such as a Leyline or powerful spells, it can become hot enough to burn exposed skin. When Viridian is used in a Witching Bell, this vibration of the material is amplified enough to become audible.   Unlike the typical bronze used in bellfounding, Viridian is much more malleable and has a much lower melting temperature, making it more akin to working with gold or silver. Because of this, jewellers are often favoured to work with Viridian over bellmakers.

Geology & Geography

Viridium is unique in that it is only found in large quantities on Drachen , though ubiquitous enough that inhabitants of the plane often have no idea of its significance. Because of this, scholars often speculate that Viridian is somehow tied to The Sundering, perhaps as a byproduct of the collapse of Drachen's Leylines.
