Coconut Clans
The Coconut Clans are a number of settlements that follow the teachings of The Way of the Cracked Nut.
Practices
The Trial of Coconuts involves standing blindfolded under a tree for an entire day. If a coconut falls and kills you, it was by the will of the coconut. Should the coconut fall and injure you, you are thought to have committed a bad deed but are still redeemable. A coconut falling and missing you is a sign of good luck, however should the fallen coconut break upon hitting the ground, it is an ill omen, potentially warning of disaster. One undergoing this trial must stay perfectly still and not avoid the coconut, should it fall. Once a year on their birthday, each resident must go through this trial or be executed via nut cracking. These executions are carried out by burying someone in the ground up to just above the shoulders so only their head is exposed. After the last rights of the one to be executed are read, the accused is then bludgeoned with a hammer. The clan refers to this as "death by nut-cracking." This method of execution is also used as the standard means of executing anyone who commits a crime that requires they be put to death. As a rite of passage for becoming an adult, an individual must break a coconut open using only their head. They have three attempts to do so and if they fail they must wait another year before they attempt this trial again. An individual may only attempt this trial on the eve of their birthday. Only those who have become adults are permitted to certain amenities such as alcohol, marriage and other things. Following a successful trial, the individual then eats half of that coconut and the other half is carved by a village elder to the likeness of the individual's face. This totem is then placed in a sacred building known as the Hall of the Golden Nut. Should someone die, they are burned via funeral pyre with their coming of age totem placed atop their head. If someone dies an honorable death or is revered as a hero, their head is instead severed from the body and skinned. The totem is then placed on the bare skull's face like a mask and displayed in separate section of the Hall of the Golden Nut. This separate section acts as a sort of museum that documents the deeds of those whose heads are displayed. Only adults are permitted to enter the Hall and must wear their coconut totem while they are inside. Sunday is the day of rest so that the nutters can truly embrace a higher state of mind with self induced concussions. A coco seer will endure back to back concussions to witness hazy visions which may lead to a prophecy but will more commonly lead to fortune telling involving a minor event. Grander prophecies seem to come as a result of accidental head trauma rather than the intentional kind. The clans have developed a spoken language that involves tongue clicking which is reminiscent of the sound of tapping coconuts together.Agriculture
Each resident is responsible for the growth of at least one palm tree. One way of earning a higher standing within the coconut society is to farm coconuts. There are seven colors of coconuts that have been grown throughout the clans history. The four most common colors are brown, green, yellow and orange with red coconuts being both smaller than normal ones as well as less common. White coconuts are exceptionally rare and considered a delicacy among the clans with gold coconuts being mostly a myth with only one ever successfully growing. The one existing golden coconut is kept guarded within the Hall of the Golden Nut and is guarded at all times by the elite warriors known as the Nut-Crackers. Many prophecies have been foretold around the golden nut, the most notable being the one who cultivates a second golden coconut will lead the clan across the sea so they may spread the way of the coconut to all who are worthy. The first golden coconut is only accessible to the coco-seers who speak to it whilst enduring their concussions in the hopes that it will speak to them. The golden coconut is said to grant immortality to any that consume it, however the coco-seers have yet to find any of the clan worthy to make such as great sacrifice as to break the golden nut. While nobody has dare tried without being put to death afterwards, rumor has it that the golden nut is unbreakable. A commonly told story is of the time of a great storm when the nut was first cultivated, a giant who had attempted to bite the golden coconut broke it's jaw. Many possibly exaggerated stories such as this are passed from generation to generation of the clans.Craftsmanship
A variety of instruments can be crafted using both the coconuts themselves as well as the palm trees. An ocarina or drums are the most common when it comes to celebration through song or dance. Lute-like instruments have recently seen a surge in popularity among some settlements as well. Masks as well as armor are fashioned from coconuts for the clans warriors who primarily use either spears or coconut flails in melee combat and slings or catapults for ranged combat. Coconut bowls are commonly beat together to form a repetitive clip-clopping sound similar to that of a galloping horse to either form an applause or use as a war cry. Makeshift horns can also be fashioned from coconuts which are also used in times of war. Shamans are known to create voodoo masks or dolls of the clans enemies and curse those who would wish harm to the clan. Bowls are the only form of dinner wear when it comes to preparing and eating meals since the clan does not believe in using plates. Before a clan member begins eating, they will touch the coconut bowl to their head as a way of giving thanks for the meal they are about to eat.Sports and athletic events
A nut-off is an athletic competition of strength and endurance where two participants take turns headbutting each other. The contest continues until one of the participants concedes or fall unconscious. Other sports also exist using coconuts as the ball for these specific games. This includes games similar to golf, soccer and volleyball. Giant crabs are also used in Colosseum-like events where contestants fight these giant grabs without any weapons to prove themselves as elite warriors. Prisoners might be forced to fight against these giant crabs as a means of entertaining the clan. These crabs are trained to fight alongside the clan's warriors and are often brought along during raids and scouting missions. The chitin of the crabs are commonly used to make armor and the claws can also be fashioned into unique weapons or tools.Slang and Common Courtesy
The clan often greets others through an action called "bumping nuts" where two individuals will touch foreheads. If two individuals accidentally bump nuts say either by turning a blind corner or one accidentally running into the other, people often believe that the destinies of those two people are intertwined in some way. Especially so if one or both of those two received a concussion as a result of the clash. The two might wind up becoming lovers, rivals or even best friends. A concussion caused by the event is said to show the unavoidable future but the hazy visions are normally hard to interpret. The words soft, hard, crack and nut have unique and a variety of meanings depending on the context in which they are used. The clan members are taught to be as hard as coconuts, so someone who is showing a sign of weakness or losing their edge/skill might be accused of going soft. Being soft for someone is often interpreted as having romantic feelings for them. Someone who wishes to confess these feelings or to even propose marriage might speak about them feeling soft towards that individual or promise to only be soft towards them. Calling someone a softie often implies that they have been unfaithful to their partner or that they are a whore. If someone speaks of wanting to "soften someone up," they usually mean they intend to seduce that person. The word nut is often used to refer to someones head or state of mind. Someone might give praise by saying "you have a good nut on your shoulders." "Nutting" a person means you headbutted them. One might threaten conflict with another by threatening to "nut" them. Saying someone has a "hard nut" is almost always seen as compliment whether it be towards their intelligence or their skill in combat. Crack is normally used in a negative matter such as if someone makes a mistake, they might say they have "cracked up" or "cracked it." Someone warning of danger or seeking to intimidate a clan member might tell them "not to crack." An insult that is rarely used as it almost always provokes conflict or is seen as dishonorable is calling someone a "cracker." This word heavily implies that someone is a failure or that they will never succeed in life Someone who is showing signs of weakness might be told to harden themselves.
