The Dawn War

Since this world was not sculpted with the Shells in mind, the afterlife of a Shell is largely unknown, often assumed to be a void of nothingness. The Eternals had the convenience of knowing that they will always be reincarnated for as long as a new life would be born. When the world was still dark, many Shells would seek out a means to either escape from their tether to the Eternals or to escape death itself. Necromancy would become the sought salvation of so many that would at first die as failed experiments. Eventually a man by the name of Vedgam Don would discover the secret of creating vampires and turn himself and his loyal followers into such creatures.

A Time of Death

Vedgam Don was said to possess several pages of Nahkar, the God of Death's, Book of the Dead. Vedgam is rumoured to have found these pages by chance after praying for a way to save his sick wife who, at the time, was with child. Many suspect that a shadow dragon by the name of Phendylra planted the pages after overhearing Vedgam's prayer.   With the intent of copying his great discovery, other practitioners of necromancy would go on to discover other pages and create ghouls. They are a much weaker form of undeath when compared to vampires but they had the advantage of not being harmed by sunlight, although it still hindered them to a degree. Only a small amount of ghouls would retain any semblance of their former selves who would call themselves the Darakhul. Ghouls needed to feast on flesh to sustain their bodies and as their numbers grew, so did the inevitable casualties.   Misguided Shells would often see becoming undead as the best solution for escaping both the Eternals and the unknown afterlife. The thought at the time was if no new life was born, the Eternals couldn't reincarnate and as a result, would eventually go extinct if this life of undeath stretched across the continent. Promises of freedom through undeath spread across the land like a plague with large communities of Shells willing to throw themselves at these practitioners. Death itself became idolised.

A Light in the Darkness

At the time, this world had no sun. There was a Divine by the name of Ivar, The Undying Light. He and his clergy were capable of emitting sunlight and would spread themselves far and wide across many communities, acting as miniature suns. They would aid in both the production of crops and act as protectors from the creatures that lurk in the dark. A glass lighthouse was constructed in the country of Escheia which was capable of magnifying any light source many times over, making it both a beacon for those seeking salvation and a haven that could sustain a much larger population. Several other lighthouses would be constructed before the war but most would be torn down in the aftermath of it.

A New God of Death

The dragon Phendylra, had successfully devoured the vestige of the god Nahkar, granting her Divinity and giving her worshippers more than enough power to challenge the Eternals. When the war began, the undead legions attacked as many cities with sunlight priests as they could, in an attempt to wipe out their biggest threats all at once. While there were some casualties among the church of Undying light, many managed to escape and regroup.   After acquiring Divine status, anyone who had been slain by Phendylra would have their souls simultaneously destroyed. Phendylra would be the first and only known means of permanently killing an Eternal. Many nobles across all the Eternal Houses would be slain by Phendylra, a few of which, were almost wiped out completely.

Birth of the Second Sun

After many years of war, Ivar would sacrifice himself to create a new sun, wiping out most of the legions vampires and weakening the ghouls enough for the Eternals to take back the advantage. With Vedgam Don, the Lord of vampires dead, the undead legions would crumble.   As a result of the war, the lands of Escheia were contaminated to the extent that no mortal could walk the blighted land and survive for long. The remaining undead would take refuge in this once great nation and call it their new haven for the black smog emitted by the land created dark clouds that cast a shadow over the fallen country. For now, those that remained of the undead legion would rest.
