There use to be a village here, however; Count Strahd fell in love with a resident named Marina. Before Count Strahd was able to turn Marina the village burgomaster and the village priest worked together to kill Marina. They felt this would save her from damnation. Unfortunately it did not save the village as Count Strahd became furious when he discovered their "treachery".
Enraged, Strahd slew the priest and the burgomaster, then used his power over the land to swell the river, flooding the village and forcing the residents to flee. Later the marsh crept in, preventing the villagers from returning. Berez has remained mostly abandoned since.
This is considered a cursed place now by all locals.

Burgomaster Lazlo Ulrich

Burgomaster Lazlo Ulrich of Berez is a sad little man with a sad little tale. After finding Marina, a reincarnation of Tatyana Federovna, wandering the woods he adopted her... then quickly attempted to reverse that so he could marry her instead. When Strahd von Zarovich visited looking for magical tombs as Vasili von Holtz, he saw Marina and began the process of turning her into a vampire. Once Lazlo realized what was happening, he staked his "daughter" though the heart earning the wrath of Strahd for himself and Berez. Now his ghost haunts the village, forever having to look upon the ruins of the town.
