The Tale of Ambarra
This tale - or legend, whichever you prefer - comes from a time of particular strife in the region of Varoona.
Following High Priest Cato Varoona's handling of the theft of the Great Pearl, the city was wracked by two months of horrendous storms. Massive waves toppled the navy and left the docks adrift in the bay. Great rains flooded the city, forcing many out of their homes. The poor took to the street, while the wealthy retreated to their larger estates inland. Lightning caused many of the old wooden buildings to light to crumble to ash or, if they survived the initial strike, to blaze long into the night.
When the Pearl was eventually recovered, the storms stopped and peace returned to Varoona.
Attempting to salvage his reputation, the High Priest sought to place blame elsewhere...
His unlucky victim? A young acolyte by the name of Ambarra. From a poor family, Ambarra spent much of her life laboring for many of the noble houses of the city until she happened to become friends with a handful of priestesses. They "adopted" her into the Temple, where her days quickly devolved into humoring the priestess' love of chaos: drugs, alcohol, pranks, and more.
The High Priest argued that it was people like Ambarra that brought down Varoona's wrath. She was the reason the Pearl was stolen to begin with. She had twisted the pillars upon which the goddess of the sea stood. She had taken chaos too far.
However, he underestimated how much the priestesses (and the people) loved Ambarra. Even in her "fits of chaos" she had done right by the people.
But the High Priest had power. Although he couldn't give her an execution, he could give her a punishment that would end in her death. And so, he tasked her with defeating an entity that had plagued the seas for centuries. If she could defeat the Great southern hydra, then it would prove that she had committed no wrong.
Ambarra departed the city with the few items the priestesses could smuggle to her: a necklace of pearls, three days worth of rations, a ceremonial dagger, and a bag of crimson powder.
The High Priest cast her out, but her goddess had not forgotten her. It is believed that Varoona appeared to Ambarra in the guise of a stranded mermaid. When Ambarra helped her back to the sea, she gifted Ambarra a elegant sword - crafted of the finest and sturdiest silver and embellished with pearls and engravings of the sea. With it, the goddess passed to Ambarra her gifts.
Ambarra found the Hydra off the coast of Port Oceana. Writings from those nearby suggest that the seas bent to her will and the storms listened to her call as she alone faced down the great beast.
The streets of Varoona were filled with crowds as Ambarra returned, a vial of the creatures blood as evidence of her success.
In honor of Ambarra, the Principles of Chaos were formally recognized and a statue erected in the bay to commemorate her victory. It is said that the weapon she used was buried with her upon her death. Though the location of her grave has since been forgotten to time...
