Ata Lopamaua

Ata Lopamaua was a Chusaine military officer who served with distinction as the field marshal of Meridian forces during the Fall of Meridia. She was born to a small family of Chusaine living on the outskirts of Hiatros, and quickly became notable in the community for a sharpness of wit and rather prodigious size. Eventually, she grew bored with a rural lifestyle by her second decade, and decided to become a permanent resident of Hiatros, finding quick work initially as a banker, and then later as a skilled Elethian communication and knowledge mage.   She soon grew bored by this too, and bought a commission in the Meridian military as a major, taking advantage of an ongoing program to encourage Elethian mages to join the military. Even in contemporary accounts, she was noted for her ability to quickly learn and adapt to enemy tactics, aptitude for leading from the front, and inspiring loyalty in her troops. By the time of the Fall of Meridia, she had risen to the rank of Colonel with command of the ill-fated Fourth Cavalry, the first division sent to investigate and quell the undead threat.   Nearly the entire Fourth Cavalry was wiped out in the first battle of the Fall of Meridia. There is still ongoing historical debate of how Ata's leadership during the battle affected the outcome; it is known that most of the division's senior leadership survived the attack, but survivor's accounts of the battle are disjointed and unreliable. What is known is that Ata's ability to quickly communicate the results of the battle to senior Meridian leadership ensured that subsequent military action was swift. Historians generally agree that her unique skills were a fortunate coincidence which minimized Meridian losses during the initial months of the war, and likely led to Hiatros being significantly more prepared to weather a siege.   Her exact exploits throughout the early war are relatively unknown due to lost Meridian documents, but it is known that by the sixth year of the war, Ata was promoted to field marshal of Meridian forces. By this time, her skill at Elethian knowledge magic had grown to allow an unparalleled level of foresight, allowing her to maximize the usage of the limited remaining Meridian forces, and to act as a key advisor to Vitilianus Attiliades.   The war took a significant toll on Ata; she was injured in seventeen separate occasions while fighting near the front, losing an eye, an arm, and both legs by the end of the war. She was unable to effectively use biofaerics due to her reliance on Elethian magic, making replacement limbs impossible. Despite this, she remained a capable advisor and commander until the end of the war, and died of a degenerative disease nearly two year after the war had ended. She is remembered throughout Meridia as one of the greatest heroes of the Meridian Empire, and a model of Meridian values and national pride.
