Eleth Injector
An Eleth Injector is a large injector used by Elethian mages to provide Eleth in areas where it cannot normally be found. They are typically formed as large syringes flanked by large Eleth collectors. The syringe is typically made with metal and glass, and heavily personalized by their owners to represents the form of the Eleth contained, typically through a combination of colours, carvings, and gemstones. Some forms of Eleth, such as metal Eleth, cannot be stored in metal containers, and are often made of wood or entirely glass.
In typical operation, the injector is plunged into a large vein, and the plunger is depressed to inject liquid Eleth into the user's bloodstream. In combat terms, this requires a Ready manoeuvre (with additional manoeuvres as normal to draw the injector). If the user is an Elethian mage, they regain one Eleth point if they had zero Eleth points remaining.
Eleth Injectors are dangerous if misused. If an Elethian mage still has Eleth points remaining when they take the injector, or takes more than one injector before naturally regaining Eleth, they must roll an HT check at a -2. The Game Master will assess failure on this check as if this was a pushed spell, which may permanently injure the mage.
If a non-mage takes an Elethian Injector, there are no permanent effect, but they must succeed at both an HT at a -4 and a Will check at a -4. Failure on either check means the user spends that many hours (additive, if both fail) in an altered state of mind depending on the Eleth type. This state can be euphoric and provide interesting information, but is also usually highly debilitating. Amongst the nobility of certain nations, injecting or eating stable Eleth is a popular form of recreation.
This exhausts the syringe, which requires recharging before being used again. The syringe must be placed in a location with a Low or higher Eleth level of its type, and will recharge in five days (though this need not be five consecutive days). If the Eleth is at Normal, it instead recharges in two days, and if it is at High, it recharges within one day. Depending on the type of Eleth, this may be particularly tricky. For example, a water Eleth injector may be dangled from a rope into a river as one travels, but earth Eleth requires a stationary setting to charge.
If the injector chamber is breached while full, the liquefied Eleth will emerge and form wild, unpredictable magics around the area for a brief moment before disappearing. This is typically not dangerous, but can be shocking and disorientating, depending upon the type of Eleth.
Mechanics & Inner Workings
Each injector is created to collect and store a specific sort of Eleth to inject into an Elethian mage. The syringe contains around 500ml of liquefied Eleth stored in a stable state, and is pushed by the plunger through the needle into the bloodstream. In practical applications, the needle is large in order to quickly push the fluid out, and the plunger is often spring-loaded, such that pulling it backwards unlocks it and frees the user's hand.
Once the injector is used, the liquid Eleth inside is gone, and must be recharged. The large Eleth collectors on each side slowly siphon Eleth from the surroundings and use very weak enchantments to passively liquefy it. Due to the natural dangers of toying with large amounts of Eleth, this is not a particularly quick process, and typically requires days.
