Ambient Magic

Most planes are suffused with ambient magic in keeping with the temperament of the worldsoul. Smaller locations with their own souls generate a weaker form of ambient magic, as well as gaining a layer of protection from planar ambient magic from their soul. Similarly, for living creatures, one of the passive effects of having an individual soul is shielding against ambient magic, whether planar or local. Due to this passive protective effect from souls, the effects of ambient magic are rarely seen in full force.

Manifestation

Ambient magic will act in accordance with the general character of its source, which is a collective soul at the local or planar level. Local souls vary too much to generalize.   Droswal's ambient magic tends to pick up on trace influences and more readily bends to the whims of humanity than the ambient magic of other planes. Creatures struck soulless and subjected to ambient magic in its entirety will generally transform in a manner that can be categorized between "internal" and "external" corruption. External corruption is the more traditional expression of ambient magic, pressing the traits of the environment into the affected individual. Internal corruption, meanwhile, is an expression of ambient magic that drags aspects of the affected individual to the surface, where they become physical traits. This use of the term "corruption" is not to be confused with the fiendish corruption that leads to devils; most of the affected soulless are more aptly categorized as monstrous than fiendish.   Emain's ambient magic is associated with nature and change. The wilderness of Emain is largely guided by ambient magic, as local souls tend to coalesce into fae and withdraw their soul's protection from the location itself. Emain's ambient magic is regarded simply as the natural way of the world, not a corruptive force. "Corrupted" fae become goblins under their own power, not under the sway of the plane's soul.   Zul's ambient magic is fundamentally broken due to the damage to the plane's soul during the demonic invasion. Its effects are unpredictable and often destructive, which contributes to the danger of exploring Zul.   Scholars are of two minds about Lont's ambient magic. It either has a hard time manifesting through the dense spiritual landscape of the plane, or it is responsible for the level of spiritualism exhibited by the giants and their world. Further research is underway to settle the debate.   Syaodukosh's ambient magic is associated with energy and consumption. Whereas Droswal's ambient magic can lead to fascinating mutations that are generally harmless to the affected creature, Syaodukosh's ambient magic generally affects creatures by harming them. Bursting into flames, convulsing in the midst of a sudden burst of lightning, or flash-freezing are the grisly ends that the soulless risk while wandering Syaodukosh.
