Automata (Aut-ah-ma-ta)
Automata are machine creatures that - usually - superficially resemble drones, typical of the anthropoid variety.
They serve a variety of functions, ranging from manual labor, to combat, to academia. The majority of Automata are mass-produced, their CPU's engrams based on the mysterious Talos device - a computerized brain rumored to have been created by the long-extinct Precursor civilization. The result is a machine with anthropoid intelligence, emotions, and capacity for learning and change. Automata identify by any gender or no gender, and it is considered rude to assume a gender pronoun based on construction or occupation.
The positronic brain technology behind the Automata is also the basis for shipboard AI, a variety of strategic computer systems, and - it is rumored - the Concordance's AI leader, the Ultra Magi.
Although exceedingly rare, there are some Automata still active that originate in the old Precursor-era. Most appear to be modern Automata, hidden among the population of the galaxy, following their own agendas...
