The Orug Amaro

The Orug Amaro are a long-lasting pirate clan, one of the few groups of brigands to endure beyond the lifetime of their first leader.   Like most pirate gangs, they began with a single vessel, operating in a defined area of space. Their founder, the dreaded Skell Nospine (likely not his real name...), preached a pseudo-religious message of 'might makes right,' and attracted many who wanted to test that theory. The clan grew, first becoming a fleet, then building a stronghold, and finally becoming a menace across huge swaths of non-aligned space.   The origin of the name 'Orug Amaro' is not well understood, and does not seem to correspond to any known language. The pirates themselves have claimed alternative meanings at various times, including: "Bitter Guts," "Cranial Smashers," various non-sensical curse words, and the sound a disemboweled aurochs makes as it lies dying. Some etymologists speculate it was made up to mess with etymologists.   In the field, Orug Amaro are marked by their distinctive helmets, each one cut into an unusual shape. The glyphs have meaning, but like their name, it is inscrutable to outsiders.    Despite their somewhat comical background, the Orug Amaro are anything but funny. There appears to be little in the way of a moral code, pirates free to attack any and all vessels and settlements, with members taking a distinct joy in inflicting maximum collateral damage. Rarely are survivors of their attacks found - anyone they encounter is murdered or enslaved.    Efforts to end the Orug Amaro have, thus far, ended in failure. They became key players during the Codridactic Wars, gladly accepting cash and unfettered access to potential victims, in exchange for terrorizing the rebels. Following the end of the war, they set themselves up within non-aligned space, carefully positioned outside the borders of the Civil Concordance. By keeping Concordance forces on edge patrolling adjacent territories, they have ingratiated themselves with the rival Union - allowed to roam free as long as they stay out of the expanding empire's way. The efforts of the Ranges of the Deep have kept them out of Al-Rem, but they continue to operate beyond the grasp of the law.   Things have changed slightly in recent years. A new Pirate King, Arch Avery, began reform efforts within the clan. Focusing more on organized crime, and using their connections to suck-up to their benefactors in The Union, they have begun to transition from pirate terrorists to authoritarian state. What their end goal is, no one can yet say. In the meantime, they remain exceedingly vicious.
