Vault Trauma Team
Trauma Teams serve as the vanguard units of the Vault, elite units dispatched to track down, obtain, and contain strange and dangerous artifacts. Recruited from some of the best militaries in existence, Trauma Teams are exceptionally skilled.
Which is good, because retrieval missions are also exceptionally dangerous. There's the usual issues with galactic travel: hull failures, FTL jumps gone wrong, cosmic horrors and disasters, active war zones... a litany of potential problems. The relics they seek can also be hazardous, ranging from toxic substances to doomsday weapons. And because what they're looking for can be so rare and powerful, many others would like to get their hands on them, by any means necessary.
Trauma Teams take their name from a time-honored practice amongst members: because injuries and casualties are so likely, every member is certified in battlefield medicine, carrying extra first aid equipment on their person and aboard their ships.
Trauma Teams are always made up of five members, although there are supporting and related positions that join a retrieval mission. The overall mission leader is assigned "Trauma-1," even though they do not form part of the away team, thus adding +1 to the list of callsigns. Teams are made up of the following positions:
- Retrieval Lead Analyst: The Lead Analyst serves as the overall mission leader, responsible for overall operations of each unit. They typically command the Vault's larger command vessel, and direct missions from above. Normally assigned the call-sign 'Trauma-1.'
- Field Analyst: The Field Analyst is the on-the-ground artifact specialist, typically the subject-matter-expert regarding the target relic. While not as heavily armed as the Watchers assigned to guard them, they're still expected to leap into combat when necessary. Assigned the call-sign 'Trauma-3' when participating in an op.
- Trauma Team Captain: Captains serve as the field commanders for Trauma Teams. They are known for their specialized helmets, which allow for total tactical immersion when commanding their troops. Usually assigned call-sign 'Trauma-2.'
- Watchers: Watchers are the combat-specialists within the Trauma Teams, armed and ready for anything. Armor and equipment vary based on skills, preference, and mission needs, with members known to sport thermal shotguns, rifles, and even grenade launchers. Watchers are often divided between scouts/infantry and so-called 'heavy' units
- Retrieval Pilot: Unless circumstances are dire, pilots are expected to remain with the command ship. A pilot is a multifaceted role, requiring mechanical skills, gunnery experience, and deep space navigation, in addition to being stellar flyers.
- Retrieval Specialists: Depending upon the mission needs, additional specialists can be assigned by The Vault.
