Backstory
Doc grew up in a rich paradise world, whose climate was perpetually warm and pleasant. The entire planet had been designed to be the perfect vacation spot, and Doc’s parents – both wealthy in their own right – had chosen it as their home. Doc grew up in luxury, never really having to do anything, surrounded by others in similar situations. All signs pointed to them growing up an arrogant, good-for-nothing rich person, completely out of touch with their surroundings. And yet, things didn’t turn out that way. Doc had an intense streak of empathy, and from a very young age they sought to help others as much as possible. Whereas other children of nobility and rich folk in the area treated their servants and their kids little better than machines, Doc knew all of them by name and often asked about their health and whether they lacked for anything. When Doc turned eighteen, they left the paradise world behind. For years, a kind of guilt had been festering inside them. Doc wasn’t stupid – they knew that in other parts of the galaxy people struggled to survive. Perhaps, they thought, there was a way they could help them. Doc spent a couple of years touring the planets near their home, trying to help in any way they could. Yet try as they might, they couldn’t really make much of a difference. They soon understood that simply pouring money into a problem was usually not enough to make it go away. And so, Doc had to go a different route. They had heard tales of a kind of retreat in a nearby planet, although not one wealthy people frequented. It wasn’t so much a vacation spot as a place to meditate and think. Perhaps Doc would find some answers there. Doc spent five years in the retreat. At first, Doc spent their days simply meditating. Soon, though, they joined the monks that ran the retreat in training, becoming an expert in martial arts. Even more importantly, Doc unlocked the potent psychic powers they always had within them. They were vitakinetic, capable of holding power over life and death. This, Doc realized, was their calling. They had the means to not simply throw money at a problem, but actively make things better, be there on ground zero. After their training was completed, Doc left the retreat, forever in the monks’ debt. They traveled to the nearest governmental outpost, where they showcased their powers. Normally, Doc would have been taken to a facility for extra training. Yet his family was powerful, and Doc themselves important. It wouldn’t do to have them go through the training and, besides, they already seemed capable enough. As such, they were thrown into the action only a few days after they had presented themselves.
