Qualifications
It is not like just anyone can go out and draw a acurate map and not one that just looks pretty. There are a handful of tools that any prospective cartographer needs to learn how to use properly. As well they do have to have good artistic skills and be able to put to paper a acurate representation of the land.
Career Progression
In most locals in the world you must go through the Cartographer Guild to become a official mapmaker.
You start as an apprentice to a master cartographer. For several years they will train, learn, and practice under the master. When ready, they will be granted the rank of a journeyman. As a journeyman, they start making maps showing them to their master for final approval before it is considered complete. When the master feels that their student has conducted themselves at the proper level, the journeyman must appear in front of the Guild Masters to achieve his master status.
Once you are a master, you can start to take on apprentices.
Payment & Reimbursement
Cartographers make their living by taking commisons to make maps for various people and organizations. The commison in any given case is worked out between the cartographer and client. The more dangoures the local the more the bounty in the end. Rumors have been told that map makers we able to retire after just a few years of work in the Dark Lands.

Workplace
Unlike most they do not gennerally have a perminate workplace per say. They spend most of their days working or traveling to their next job. Some very well off ones may have special wagons or other transportaion created for them. However a job generally starts the same way. It begins with the locals, asking them questions about routes and paths in the area, any dangers, and the ilk. They will also try and find any existing maps of the area, whether from the Cartographer Guild or others. Once they have established this base, they will start going out into expeditions of the area to be mapped.
Provided Services
The two primary purposes that a cartographer fulfills are, first and foremost is map production. The secondary and generally unknown service is finding proper navigation through a region.
