Vor'thul

In the annals of Eärendor's history, few nations have undergone as remarkable a transformation as Vor'thul. As a scholar and observer, I must admit my initial apprehension towards the practice of necromancy, an arcane art most find abhorrent. However, Vor'thul has defied convention, weaving the threads of this detestable magic into a tapestry of honorable purpose. The nation's commitment to responsible necromancy, even while the presence of undead unnerves me, is nothing short of extraordinary.   L.C.
Nestled in the northwesternmost reaches of the Vanyar Consortium, Vor'thul stands as Eärendor's oldest kingdom. For millennia, it has been at the forefront of magical development and the mastery of necromancy, an art that both captivates and horrifies. Emerging from humble beginnings as a collection of death-worshipping tribes, Vor'thul has recently emerged on the world stage. Its ruling faction, The Order of the Necrologists, advocates for responsible necromancy, emphasizing ethical treatment of the risen dead. However, this shift in regime and purpose has ignited tensions among the kingdom's factions.

History

Dawn of Necromancy

The origins of Vor'thul, shrouded in the mists of time, remain obscured by the turbulent centuries before the Rift, a great event that impacted the entire world. During this enigmatic period, spanning over two millennia, historical records are sparse. Legends handed down through generations tell of an era when Vor'thul's tribes venerated Thal, the embodiment of death. In those ancient times, necromancy was practiced in its most primal form, binding these early people to the intricate cycle of life and death.

The Rift

With the advent of the Rift, a world-shattering event whose details remain lost to history, arcane magic surged through Eärendor, reshaping the world and its inhabitants. Vor'thul, once shrouded in obscurity, emerged as a beacon of necromantic prowess. Magicians from across the realm flocked to its heart, eager to unlock the mysteries of life and death. This era witnessed the kingdom's power wax and wane, with necromancy oscillating between an art of reverence and dread.

The War of Ascendancy

In the year 1012 A.R, Vor'thul teetered on the brink of civil upheaval. Multiple factions, each asserting a rightful claim to the nation's leadership, engaged in a brutal and devastating conflict known as the War of Ascendancy. This tumultuous period saw the once-mighty Thal'amat Empire fragment into the nomadic Thal'amat tribes that exist today.

The Order of the Necrologists

Emerging victorious from the chaos of the War of Ascendancy, The Order of the Necrologists assumed control of Vor'thul. This ruling party, consisting of fourteen council members representing the kingdom's seven burghs, champions responsible necromancy. They envision a Vor'thul that prioritizes the ethical treatment of both sentient and mindless undead. The Order's rise marked the dawning of a new era for Vor'thul as it transitioned from a land steeped in ancient customs to one at the forefront of magical progress.   In 1035 A.R, the illustrious Memento Mori Academy was established, solidifying Vor'thul's reputation as a foremost center of magical education. This institution played a pivotal role in nurturing generations of necromancers and mages, shaping the kingdom's progress.

Geography

Vor'thul sprawls across the northwestern expanse of the Vanyar Consortium, spanning from the shores of the Mare Ignotum in the west to the imposing Eäred mountain range in the east. The nation's landscape predominantly consists of vast, sweeping greenlands and rolling hills, interspersed with pockets of ancient forests that punctuate the terrain. Much of the area spread across the nation, not inhabited by the living in villages, towns, or cities, is dedicated solely to the interment of the dead, with cemeteries that occasionally stretch for miles without end, housing thousands of bodies each, either in simple dug graves, or elaborate crypts owned by the richest noble families of Vor'thuli society.

Factions

Order of the Necrologists

The ruling party of Vor'thul, The Order of the Necrologists, comprises fourteen council members hailing from the kingdom's seven burghs. They champion progressive and ethical necromancy, placing great importance on the treatment and use of both sentient and mindless undead. Their vision seeks to redefine the art of necromancy and its role in society. The Order itself is still fairly young in its rulership of the kingdom as of this writing, having come to power in 1012 A.R, following the long and bloody civil war between several groups and nobles, all presenting de jure claims over the throne.

Thal'amat

The Thal'amat represent the remnants of Vor'thul's aboriginal tribes, now reduced to nomadic camps and caravans. They practice an ancient form of necromancy, centered around the veneration of Thal, the embodiment of death. Many of their customs and traditions have left an indelible mark on the culture of rural settlements in Vor'thul.

The Undertakers

Operating within The Order of the Necrologists, The Undertakers focus solely on the research and management of necromancy. They are responsible for maintaining, storing, categorizing, and utilizing the corpses entrusted to their care. This group, renowned for its mastery of necromancy, is on the frontline against aberrant undead and other threats to the kingdom.

Vor'thul City

Vor'thul City, the capital of the kingdom, lies along the Mare Ignotum's shores. Once a sprawling necropolis, it has transformed into a bustling metropolis where modern culture and technology have permeated every facet of life. The city serves as the epicenter of Vor'thul's political and magical power, housing The Order of the Necrologists' council and the most prestigious of the kingdom's schools.

The Memento Mori Academy

As the most prestigious of Vor'thul's necromantic schools, the Memento Mori Academy admits only the most magically gifted individuals with exceptionally high aptitude scores. This institution provides comprehensive education in magic and necromancy, with the ultimate goal of producing graduates who serve Vor'thul with distinction.
