The thrum of the engine soothes her and reminds her that she is placing distance between her and whatever it is that may be following her. She wasn't always on the run, though - she was once a respected member of the McVail gang in Chicago, Illinois.

Bernadette's list of documented employers is hazy, at best. Most of her employment history is of the unsavory type - from running liquor down from Canada to Chicago during Prohibition or manipulating crooked Police Officers and low-level opposing Gang members alike.
Mental Trauma
On the last of her assignments for the McVail gang, she had a brief encounter with the explainable that was both terrifying and inspiring. As a result, she tends to be restless and nomadic - feeling that a permanent address would be a weakness and threat to her safety.

The sole remaining member of the McVail gang, Johnny Holloway. After the gang suffered it's catastrophic blow, Johnny retired to a cabin in northern Wisconsin where he maintains a very low profile. Bernadette visits when able but more often sends letters to a nearby post office where Johnny retrieves them in secret.
