Personal history
Clint was born in 1984 to Harold and Edith Barton in Waverly, Iowa. Clint had an older brother, Barney. Growing up, Clint worked at his father's butcher shop, Barton's Butchery. Harold was abusive, especially when drunk, and would beat his wife and young boys. Barney taught Clint how to fight and shoot.
In July 1992, Edith attempted to run away with her sons. They spent a week in the neighboring county of Floyd. Edith Barton was arrested after attempting to rob a gas station with her sons, however, the charges were dropped and the family was taken back to the Barton Family Farm. Harold beat all three and got drunk. Harold then left his boys at home and left with his wife. They got into a car accident and were pronounced dead at the scene. Barney and Clint were then placed into foster care.
Barney and Clint stayed at the Drake household in Waverly for a year. Their next placement, where they stayed for 2 years, was the Miller house in Sumner. At the Miller house, Clint was gifted a bow so he could shoot again. The Barton Boys then moved on to the Clayton family, who lived in Evansdale in Black Hawk County, where they stayed for 6 months until the Claytons became pregnant. The Barton Boys were then moved back, after 5 months, to the Miller house, where they stayed for a year. The Millers were about to begin the adoption process when the boys were moved again to the Lockwood house in Waterloo, Black Hawk County. The boys stayed at the Lockwood house for 3 months.
Barney and Clint ran away from the Lockwood house after Henry Lockwood, their foster father, boxed Clint's ears, for accidentally dropping a plate, like their father used to do.
The Barton boys made their way to the Miller house to tell them goodbye before they eventually joined Carson's Travelling Circus under the surname Miller. Clint used his archery skills to become a star carnival act as the "World's Greatest Archer". Barney performed with a fellow performer, Buck Chisolm, who was named "Trickshot".
Clint and Barney dropped out of high school in 1999. Clint was a freshman while Barney was a senior.
Clint discovered that someone was embezzling funds from the circus in 2000. When he reported this to Trickshot, however, he was severely beaten as Trickshot was the man embezzling funds from the circus. Barney and Clint escaped and ran to the nearest town, which was Des Moines. Here, they encountered Nick Fury, a high-ranking SHIELD agent, who was on a mission to determine if Sam Jordan belonged on the Index.
Nick Fury witnessed Clint's remarkable archery skills. Nick extended an invitation to join SHIELD to both Barney and Clint. Clint accepted while Barney declined. Barney completed his G.E.D. and joined the army, while Clint completed the mission with Fury. After determining that Sam Jordan did not belong on the Index, Fury and Clint returned to SHIELD headquarters. Fury was promoted to Director of SHIELD that year.
Clint's first official mission was 6 months later. He was assigned to protect a diplomat by the name of Harry Atkinson. Harry was sent to Yugoslavia. Here, he was the target of an assassination attempt. Clint successfully pulled off a mission that would've normally taken a team of 3 or more agents, all without an extraction plan. This event got Clint promoted to Clearance Level 3.
Clint was then sent to the inauguration of George W. Bush. Here, Clint managed to apprehend an assassin intended for Bush without the public or the Secret Service ever knowing. Clint was then promoted to Clearance Level 4.
In July 2001, Clint was sent to Novi Grad, Sokovia, to prevent the assassination of Zivojin Antonov, a Sokovian general, under the name Operation Hotel. However, the KGB sent out a Black Widow, Natalia Romanova, from the Red Room to assassinate the general. After Clint confronted Natalia on the roof of the Hotel Soloviev, he refused to shoot her and convinced her to defect to SHIELD.
To promote Natalia's loyalty to SHIELD, she and Clint were forced to attend SHIELD Academy. Here, they were assigned to the care of Laura Akers, a student who was being groomed to take over the role of Agent 19. Phil Coulson was assigned to be their handler.
