Basic Information

Anatomy

Unicorns look like a horse but with a frontal horn, 50 to 80 cm long. They are imposing and athletic and have a beautiful head of medium size, with a rectilinear or slightly convex profile, well-defined ganaches and a broad forehead. The eyes are large and expressive and the gaze is usually calm and gentle. The neckline is long and elegant, well set and carried high. The shoulders are strong, oblique and well muscled, the withers are prominent. The chest is broad and deep. The back is straight and of medium length. The hindquarters are powerful and well muscled, the tail is set high. The croup is quite long, ample and well rounded. The limbs are solid, muscular and strong, they have broad and lean joints; the tendons are strong and well detached.

Genetics and Reproduction

The mare has a cycle of 21 to 23 days: the first part is 9 to 20 days long while the second part is 3 to 12 days long. This second part is the heat period at the end of which the mare can be pregnant. The foal then stays inside for 10 to 12 months. Usually, the mare will have one baby at a time, she can rarely have twins.

Unicorns become sexually mature at 12 to 18 months old.
