Moth Balls

Created by Peekajinx
"We may hear silence, but to these monsters, it is deafening."
-- Carl T. Sampson, audio engineer for Polk Audio

Once the existence of Species X-10 became known, it was a race to discover what could destroy them. Since they were no longer hidden, Species X-10 were openly attacking the human population. Unfortunately, as they had evolved to move at such fast speeds, it is impossible to outrun them and many current weapons were too slow to do them any harm. However, for decades, certain military groups had been working to perfect audio weaponry that could emit focused sonic audio waves. It was found that sound frequencies (not to be confused with radio frequencies) above 675 kHz caused intense pain to Species X-10, causing them to slow and hold their heads to try to block out the noise.

Shortly after this discovery, Polk Audio, an audio product manufacturer, began producing what they dubbed "Moth Balls". These small circular speakers, only an inch in diameter became the saving grace of the common populace. They could be worn or carried. When squeezed between two fingers, they emitted a sound frequency of 700 kHz. This could potentially stop a Species X-10 attack on a person, by causing the attacker to back off in pain.

The name "Moth Balls" was coined by engineer Brandon Waltz in reference to the ball-like shape and the evolution of the Greater Wax Moth. These tiny moths, until now, had the best high-pitch hearing in the natural kingdom. They could hear frequencies as high as 300 kHz. This ability was developed to avoid being eaten by bats, whose echolocation can reach 212 kHz. For reference, humans may only hear up to 20 kHz, which declines with age.

Significance

Used as protection against Species X-10. Helps to stop an attacking creature in its tracks so as the person can get away, or kill the creature if able.

I know that bullets are faster that sound, so mouth balls mace an omnidirectional wave of sound around the user like a shield? Exist in America zones with high fragrances sounds put to protect people from mosquitoes, they can't make the same thing?

Bullets are definitely faster than sound, but the movement of Species X-10 makes them hard to hit! Even though their movement is sort of "stop and go", it is still extremely fast, making them almost appear super blurry when you see them. The sound does hold them off a bit like bug spray might hold off mosquitoes, lol. The sound hurts X-10's ears and head causing them to slow down and stop, making them much easier to attack.
