Russian Federation

Created by: Peekajinx
At 17,125,200 sq km (6,612,100 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world, almost twice the size of Canada, the second largest. It covers the entire north side of the Asian continent and about a third of Europe. Total, it takes up more than 1/8th of land. Despite the size, the majority of Russia’s 165 million people live on the European side of the country with huge expanses of wild plains and tundra on the Asian side. It’s capital, Moscow, ranks as the 14th largest city in the world.   Unfortunately, as a result of World War III (2028 – 2034), Russia was left cratered and broken by the bombings from the United States and its allies. Some cities had been wiped away completely and much of Moscow lay in ruins. Millions of lives were lost and the country has struggled economically ever since. Large portions of the country are now inhabitable due to high levels of radiation.   Due to the majority of the populace not being in line with its dictator, militaries from other countries have come together in an attempt to pick up the pieces and help the Russian Federation from slipping into third world country status after the fall of its government.

Demographics

81% of Russia's population are ethnic Russians. The other 19% consisting of 170 different ethnic groups. The only official language is Russian, though there are about 100 languages spoken in the country.

Government

As of the end of World War III, Russian citizens have re-instituted their democratic government in place of the dictatorship that had come to power in the early 2020s. The government consists of the 3 branches of most democracies, legislative, executive, and judiciary. However, instead of the six-year term indicated in the previous Constitution of Russia, the country has adopted the United States of America's four-year term, with the ability for the president to run for two terms. There are four leading politic parties: United Russia, the Communist Party, the Liberal Democratic Party, and A Just Russia.

Defences

The military consists of the Ground Forces, Navy, and Air Force. After the war, Russia's army has dwindled drastically from mass casualties, and due to the loss in the war, the draft for male citizens aged 18-27 has been rescinded while the country rebuilds.

Infrastructure

The infrastructure in the Russian Federation as a whole is extremely underdeveloped, made more so by the war. It's capital, Moscow, is slightly better off than the rest of the country as a result of it being the center of most of the populace.

Out of curiosity, why did World War III last so long? 6 years is a very long time for a World War in the modern era, seeing as nukes would end the conflict within days if not hours. I understand the idea that they may not hit their targets due to being shot down, but not all would be intercepted, and multiple would be launched towards targets such as the capitals of nations. Again, just my curiosity nagging me.

It's a legitimate question. Honestly war is not just dropping bombs and fighting. For a war to be considered a world war, it means that two or more world military powers get into a war with each other. This could start as a diplomatic war that could last years before any real fighting began. As Russia is one of the largest manufactures for military grade weapons, the rest of the world hesitated to violently attack them and instigate a global meltdown from nuclear warheads that could damage the earth and atmosphere to the point of no return, leading to the extinction of the human race. This didn't stop the Russian armies from terrorizing nearby countries and attempting to assert their power over them. Other countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and others became allies in the fight against Russia and attempted to protect those that were under attack, but the military's hands were tied until all diplomatic attempts to stop the war from worsening failed. Unfortunately, due to Russia's size and harsh environment, especially in the winter, it was extremely hard for anyone to attempt to invade. Russia also has a vast amount of resources and they don't really rely on commercial trade as much as other countries might. In fact, since they actually provide most of the world's oil, oil products, gas, timber, machinery, and equipment, it's no wonder many countries were hesitant to push this into an all-out violent war.   (While my notes are based on actual facts about Russia, I wrote in a way that it would relate to the overall story I am trying to tell. However, I wanted to point out that many could actually argue that we are actually at war with Russia right now, and have been for a few years now, and it has the potential to escalate to a World War in the future.)

Also wanted to point out that my story actually doesn't have anything to do with actual politics, lol. I'm just setting the scene, but I am certainly happy to elaborate to make it more believable! :)
