Bionic Humans

Bions are humans who have undergone surgeries to add mechanical prosthetics to their bodies. These prosthetics are typically obtained after the loss of a limb or organ. Bions have their own challenges in addition to the ones present simply from being human. The mechanical control centers of bions are Solid TetraLight Complexes. These control centers can be placed anywhere, but are commonly found at the base of the skull.

A Blessing and A Curse

Most bions regard their mechanical parts as both a blessing and a curse. For the blessing, they are able to use the body part they lost as normal. For the curse, they are unable to feel pain in their mechanized limbs and organs. The inability to feel pain causes more harm than one might expect, as many Bions go throughout life unaware of malfunctions that are occurring. Although fatal malfunctions are rare, any malfunction can have undesirable effects on the quality of life of the bion in question.

Registration Laws

Many areas require bions to sign up for a registry before obtaining the surgery to restore the function of their limb or organ. These registries are usually kept away from the public eye out of respect of the rights of the bions in question, but they are maintained for the purpose of providing financial aid. The areas with bion registries are generally the ones which give grants of over 800 GAD per quarter to bions. The grants are to help cover the costs of mechanics, which are not covered under universal healthcare.

Airline Issues

Under international law, bions and androids are not permitted to travel overseas in non-bionic-designated commercial aircraft. Unfortunately, most airlines only have one or two bionic-designated aircraft in their entire fleet, as the cost of making airliners that meet the requirements is quite high. The incident which caused these laws to go into place was a fatal airline crash caused by an android's Solid TetraLight Complex accidentally connecting to the airliner's TetraLight-based instruments.
