World War III

World War III was a planet-wide war over the dwindling supply of natural oil deposits. The major battlefields were largely located in the Middle East, South America, and North America. The war lasted for nine years, and ended with the Treaty of Astreinyx in 2114 CE. The treaty was set forth by Science Without States, and led to the formation of the ten super-countries of the world.

Nuclear-Powered Volcano

During the course of this war, a nuclear bomb was dropped on Canada. The bomb impacted a mountain, and no lives were lost as a direct result of the bomb itself. Despite this, the nuclear bomb was the cause of the unnatural winter now covering large parts of the Yukon, as it caused the mountain — a then-inactive volcano — to begin spewing large amounts of ash, magma, and natural gas. The volcano has since calmed its violent explosions, but it is still considered active.

Ecological Damage

The massive oil drilling operations set forth by the governments of Brazil, the United States of America, Yemen, and Venezuela had severe ecological impacts. For example, the pronghorn has been declared extinct after fracking disrupted migration patterns, causing an irreparable downturn in population. There has also been a significant decrease in pollinator numbers in areas with large amounts of oil wells. For example, some formerly-common beeflies in southern Brazil are now considered endangered.

Aftermath & Pollution

In the aftermath of World War III, the Rothera Climate Act came into effect. This international law system called for the cleanup of all the residual pollution left from the long-term usage of fossil fuels. The usage of Astreinyx in cleanup efforts accelerated the rate of reparation to the point where over 100 years of damage was reversed in twenty years. The Rothera Climate Act will have cleared up 250 years worth of pollution. By 2162 CE, the average world temperature is expected to drop 3°C since the measurements taken in 2110 CE.
