Ponape Scripture
English, by Captain Abner Ezekiel Hoag, 1734.
Published posthumously c. 1795, in Boston, as a sextodecimo, 4" × 6.75", but inferior in accuracy and completeness to Hoag’s manuscript, copies of which purportedly still exist. Details a South Sea islander cult of humans who worship and breed with the deep ones.
Summary: Ponape Scripture tells of the journey of Captain Abner Ezekiel Hoag to a South Pacific island wherein he encountered a group of people who worshipped a strange sea god. Captain Hoag stayed some time and recorded many of the islanders’ bizarre and terrible rites. His account describes how the people interbred with the sea-dwelling denizens of this god. The offspring from these unholy couplings would be born appearing fully human but, over time, would grow more like their undersea brethren. Eventually, they would be wholly consumed by the inhuman compulsions of these beings and be drawn to the sea.
