Footwear

Each inhabited biosphere has its own fashions and traditions for footwear. When Earthship Ark was launched from Earth, the inhabitants generally brought their fashions with them. Some biospheres were set up as intentional communities with a lower tech level, and these generally had their own ideas about clothing and footwear.   Fashions have changed over the centuries of the Ark’s voyage, so by the time of the campaign each biosphere has its own distinct style of footwear.   Biosphere Β10 – Many women (other than farmers) wear high heels, including spikes and platforms. Brandi refuses to wear anything else, even when running around in a rural biosphere.   Biosphere Β2 - Heels are shorter than in Β10. Brandi had trouble finding shoes that are up to her standards, but she did buy a pair of high-heel hiking boots.   Biosphere Α6 - Heel size is an indicator of social class. Upper-class and wealthy people (of any gender) wear extremely high heels or platforms, which require training to walk in. Lower-class people wear flats. Even androids have feet-extensions. Arkist protesters have adopted sandals and bare feet as a sign of non-conformity. Homelanders of low status wear much higher heels than would be expected.   People working in the Ark’s Central Hull sectors mostly wear sneaker-like shoes that are part of the standard equipment supplied by the Ark. These are spurned by Brandi.   Sector Η3 - Material Storage stores basic clothing for the colonists on Tau Ceti e, including sneaker-like shoes, workboots and rubber boots that make Brandi despair for the future of humanity.   Androids do not generally wear shoes; their feet may be made to resemble shoes.
