Jezi
The Jezi, or Winter Witches, are the sorceresses of the Cliffs of Fear. Their official allegiance is to Venfros - more specifically The Ice Queen - but they have served Aedenhal since the end of The Veddehjaldr, save for a few instances when tensions between the two nations arose. They are made up of Uggrfyolth and are respected by the Aedenskolt, who view them as the foremost barriers against the dangers of The Windy Country.
Jezi are practitioners of lyristry and runewrit, speaking and writing traditional Vjtryazk to wield their magic. Today, Jezi are the only ones among the Uggrfyolth who are taught Vjtryazk, and they're taught it for the very particular purpose of their spellcraft. This purpose means they do not tend to grasp the grammatical structures or conversational words of the language well enough to speak it in a normal social setting, though the Ice Queen and her most elite have often prided themselves on keeping the language alive by learning it in this depth.
Grammar and Forms
The most-correct spelling is "Jezi," whose plural is "Jezi." When pronounced, the "j" is soft like a "y." It is not uncommon, colloquially, for the plural form to be "Jezis," though it is technically incorrect. The spelling "Yezi" is also not uncommon, especially among Aedenskolt, though its correct plural form is "Yezis," which increases the confusion surrounding the word (especially when spoken). Finally, "Jezi" with a hard "j" sound is also used colloquially at times, though it's wholly incorrect. This discrepancy arises from Vjtryazk, the (now-largely-dead) language of the Uggrfyolth of old. In Vjtryazk, the letter "j" was used as a vowel, with the approximation sound of a short "yi," whereas the letter "y" was used to designate a consonant, approximately a long "ya." Since the word Jezi comes from Vjtryazk, the spelling "Jezi" is correct. In Human Common, "y" is instead typically used to designate a vowel with "j" representing a hard consonant sound, and thus the form "Yezi" is more easily recognizable among foreign speakers, leading to its own prominence. The pronunciation of Jezi with a hard "j" stems from those same foreigners, albeit with an alteration of phonemes rather than spelling. The correct plural form actually stems from Aedenslang, not Vjtryazk, which is what most Uggrfyolth now speak. In Vjtryazk, all Jezi were considered something of a singular unit, a sort of sisterhood, and so a plural form was gramatically nonsensical. In Aedenslang, words ending with a vowel typically have the same form when made plural, with the determination of number made by an augmenting word ("a deer" vs. "all of those deer," for an English instance). This norm fit well with the lack of a plural in Vjtryazk, and was thus adopted as the official form. It is, however, a norm that clashes with Human Common, which is again the source of the incorrect "s" where it does arise.
