The Northern War was actually a series of wars between Aedenhal and a combined coalition of Vestal and Kandesh, as well as Horse-Lords predominantly occupying the modern region of Zaral.

Originally, it began with Horse-Lord incursions into western Zaral, formerly Aedenhalian land. This is usually not considered an official part of the war, however, and "The Northern War" is usually used to label the conflict which Aedenhal began as aggressors, as they sought to occupy the Grey Woods, core territories of Kandesh.
