Conviction Caleah

Conviction Caleah

"Like a knife sword through butter a piano."
— Conviction, stolen from Kitarel Vesneyva

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Thin, scrawny build, but otherwise healthy.

Body Features

Ruddy, weatherworn skin.

Facial Features

Conviction's face is a mass of scarring. The overly tight skin distorting his once handsome features. The right corner of his upper lip is completely missing, giving the appearance of a permanent sneer. His hair is a wild mop. The occasional silver hair is just enough to look like light gleaming off the otherwise perfect jet black, a streak of white starting to appear over his left temple.

Identifying Characteristics

On the back of his left hand is a brand of a hollow square, the mark of a smuggler in his homeland of Amn. On the back of his right hand is a brand of a hollow circle with six outward facing spikes, a symbol associated with Pelor.

Apparel & Accessories

Around town, he usually wears dark, crudely patched clothes, the only ornamentation being a golden amulet with the same sun motif as his brand. Sometimes, he will wear a fine set of clothing: a pair of soft leather soled boots, black linen pants, a black silk shirt with golden embroidery highlighting, and a black silk hooded cloak. He always carries a sword hilt (the Sun Blade) and his shield, a small but heavy metal buckler, painted black with a sun emblazoned on it. The back of the shield has a series of leather loops riveted on, which hold small metal spikes, balanced for throwing.   When out adventuring, he wears black studded leathers, and supplements his weapons with a longbow and quiver.

Specialized Equipment

Melee combat and scouting.

Mordecai started life as a sailor, but soon took to smuggling to try and make some extra coin. After being ratted out by a compatriot, Mordecai was imprisoned where Bartholomew, a cleric of Pelor became Mordecai's cell-mate and made Mordecai's redemption his personal mission. There, in the dark, Bartholomew led Mordecai through a rite dedicating him to Pelor, in which Mordecai adopted the name “Conviction.” Conviction was released soon after, and made his way to Vareholm for a fresh start.   Was thought to have perished in battle while attempting to distract a group of Wolverine Blights in order to give his comrades the chance to flee. Instead, he arrived back in Vareholm several days later with major facial scarring.

Return to Gilnaith
Deepsnow 16, 242

Ah, finally a good night's rest. I don't remember any dreams. It's glorious. They may come back, but for now I'm gonna bask in it.   We took a large expedition back to Gilnaith to scout out some of the sites and challenge Kyas Malisius, an aspect of the Umbral Herald. The circle in is guarded. The guards ask for citizenship passes. If we're gonna keep going in there, it may not be a terrible idea to figure out how to get some of these, otherwise, I get the feeling that the security on the circle is just gonna keep getting stronger.   After that, we went back to the armory, one of the first places we went in Gilnaith. The place was filled with constructs shooting odd weapons. And each time we fight them, they're updating something that they're calling the "Evolution Protocol." Between that and the fact that they can call for support from a distance, I think they must have some sort of psychic or magic communication abilities. At some point we should also try to find a way to block that. Inside there was some sort of...device that looked like it was meant for a door. When I tried to open it up and futz with it, all the doors closed, and all the air was sucked out of the building. A bit of a scary moment. We'll need to try and figure out the "password" for it before we go in next time.   After that we went to deal with Kyas. We had to walk through all of our nightmares to get to her, and then when we reached her, in plane of white nothingness. There, Kyas, who appeared as a vaguely draconic figure composed of void, talked to us. She told us of our quarry. That the succubus would remain unseen, split us apart, and seek to turn us upon each other. And then she did all of that herself. Well, at least the first two things. Kaecil seemed to take it upon himself to do the last part, fireballing one of our new residents, summoning demons to attack the rest of us. It turned out, he hadn't even fallen prey to any sort of compulsion, just thought that he was supposed to show he was the strongest. He was taken down, but not without difficulty, and after we felled him, the demon he summoned pounced on him and killed him. We did manage to finish it off fortunately.   Meanwhile, I guess, Arias was doing the right thing, trying to find the demon through its invisibility, and once we determined that it wasn't present, Kyas again presented herself. She offered us some boons of herself, and information. Still warning us that we weren't ready for the inmate herself. We also learned that the shadow giant is an aspect of Tharizdun, as she is an aspect of the Umbral Herald. We also talked with Bard for a bit.   After that, we went and saw the spear throwers, which were neat and looked to be styled after a hand, but nothing was really happening there, and then we went home.

Delnor Y Tho
Deepsnow 14, 242

Sitting in the Hearth explaining what happened during Delnor's Abduction   takes a swig of his wine. "Well, I'm not sure how it happened for the others, but I was down by the docks, when this wizard that some of us freed from a tower a little while back, he appeared and uh... teleported me away. We were brought to somewhere else. I guess it was the inside of some sorta creature. But it was weird, there were hallways and doors like you'd find in a building. And things inside were just...odd. like there were some suits of armor playing some sort of game with a dangerous magical ball. There was a giant mimic. some trapped doors. Then Delnor talked to us for a bit, and teleported us back here." takes another deep swig. "Not sure how he was able to snag us from inside the barrier. I'da thought it woulda protected us from that."

The Sunken Fortress

Well, I went to check out this Sunken fortress, in hopes that we'd find some answers there about what the elves who used to live here were like. I guess I sorta found out some answers, but mostly just got more confused. When we got in, there, we walked a ways through the fort, until we came to a pool filled with water. Kaecil did something to let us breathe the water, which was an interesting experience. One I wish I'd known back in my smuggling days. Well, we went in and found ourselves in a hall of murals depicting events of times long past. Not really sure what happened next, but while we were looking at the murals, somehow we found ourselves transported... to the past? I think? I'm not really sure if we actually got brought back in time, or if we were reliving someone else's memories. Thinking back on it, it was probably the latter. I could understand them, even though I don't know the local elvish tongue. The first thing I remember was hearing in my head "Elo-ren needs you."   After all that, we were brought back to the fort we were just exploring, but before it had sunken into the swamp. There was a massive battle all around us. I never understood before what a battle was actually like; the terror in people's eyes, the weariness, the constant stress, the stench. I'm surprised I made it through one battle. I now thank Pelor every day that Mirabella made it through all of hers. We fought seemingly unending hordes of zombies, some zombie beholders, some sort of abomination with weird, creepy, long claws. And then we had to go save the civilians.   On our way, we were beset by another horde of zombies, backed by some sort of long snakelike skeletal creatures. It was a hard fight, and at one point something happened to Cayden. He stood frozen, and some zombies made it through our line to attack him. It was a close call, there, but we got managed to finish them off, just in time for the civilians from the village to make it across the bridge. We moved to cover their retreat, despite reports of a draugr, a dragon, and seeing some massive beast come out of the ocean. I mean, this thing was maybe as tall as the spire of Vareholm at the shoulder. We covered the retreat of the civilians back to the fortress, but as we were crossing the final bridge, the dragon caught up to us. Only it wasn't a living dragon, it's flesh had all been stripped away. It did still breathe lightning at us, which I was lucky enough to avoid, but it looked like it woulda hurt. When it finally came close enough to the ground for us to fight it, we surrounded the creature, and luckily managed to keep it from making an escape before we could destroy it.   After we finished off the dragon-skeleton and some draugr, everything faded out again. We were greeted by an entity calling himself "Rilatar Xyrren." I got the feeling he was some sort of celestial creature, but he had taken on the form of an elf, and thanked us for not desecrating his home. I'm not sure if he was referring to the current or past fortress as his home, or what we could have done to desecrate it. Then he gave us all gifts. I received a ring, called "The Amber Flame," which surrounds me in a cloak of flames. It'll be nice next time I have to fight the godsdamned trees, but I do worry that it'll freak Mirabella.   But yeah, lots of questions, not many answers.
