Eventide Archive

Along the coast exists a large bell-shaped dome that can be seen from the sea with a lighthouse on top of it. The columns have every sea creature known to exist carved into the stone and a mural extends around the dome, retelling the history of the Cradle of Gods as it is known so far.
The entryway is expansive, including many shelves for the various proficiency books that can be borrowed by adventurer's, but also many books as part of a free book exchange. To the left is a large library full of wondrous tomes of knowledge, and to the right, several doors leading to various-sized rooms of learning. From small play centers for children to a large theater for guest lecturerers. All rooms are lit in appropriate levels of lighting by stunning sea glass lanterns.
In addition to providing free classes to sailors, fishermen, frontiersmen, and their families, as well as serving secondarily as the research center for information regarding The Cradle of the Gods, the Eventide Archive provides Library Adventuring Services to players. It allows players to rent books during adventures. Each book grants a proficiency bonus to one type of skill. Books can be rented for any skill, but can only grant you a bonus for things that can be reasonably learned from books (i.e. how to stabilize a dying person, the art of closing a deal, the proper form for throwing a discus, deciphering ciphers, etc.) As long as you can justify it to your DM, you can use the book. The user must spend at least (5 x Proficiency Mod of book) minutes thumbing through the book for answers when attempting a check with it. The following table shows the level of books that are available per CP invested in the Library.
  100 CP = Level 1 (+2 Proficiency Modifier) - 10 minutes
500 CP = Level 5 (+3 Proficiency Modifier) - 15 minutes
900 CP = Level 9 (+4 Proficiency Modifier) - 20 minutes
1300 CP = Level 13 (+5 Proficiency Modifier) - 25 minutes
1700 CP = Level 17 (+6 Proficiency Modifier) - 30 minutes
Proficiency granted by books do not stack with any proficiency a player already has. However, the book’s proficiency will override a character’s proficiency if it is higher.
Deposit on books: 30 Gold x Proficiency Mod it provides. At the end of the session, if the book returns safely, then the player gets half their deposit back. At DM discretion, certain activities or events during an adventure can result in a percentile roll to see if the book is damaged (5% fail chance). If damaged, the book becomes unusable and players do not get deposit back.
