Firefly Squid
Squid are cephalopods and are characterized by bilateral body symmetry, a prominent head, and a set of arms or tentacles. Some have been given the nickname inkfish by fishermen because of their ability to squirt ink. Many squid species have the ability to alter their colouration to blend in with their local environment.
The Firefly Squid is found in typical 600–1200 feet in the ocean areas they inhabit. Like other squids they can change their colouration, but with an added twist. The FS has a form of bioluminescence that produces a blue glow on its underside. It is believed this is to help protect it from predators that dwell below it, the glow helping it to mask itself against the sunlight that filters through from above.
