Slave Mining Pick
The mining picks that the slaves use to mine the iron and other minerals around the Shards are common and multipurpose tools. The shaft is usually made from ashwood trees and the iron head is pointed on one end, and flat on the butt end. This serves for both mining and digging. The later is usually used to make holes here and there for other jobs or even to dig furrows in the ground for planting. Of all the tools that the slaves are given, this one is the most weapon-like and is watched carefully when in the hands of a slave.
Dwarven revolt of 95
In fact the Dwarven revolt of SF 95 was because of this very tool. the dwarves that were mining in the caves under Rend made their stand and killed over fifteen orc slave guards to gain their freedom. They were finally taken down, but not without much loss of life on both sides. in the end the dwarves were subdued and rechained.Today's slaves
The problem today has been corrected by installing an easy system. The mining pick is chained to the neck of the dwarf next to the slave so that any swing in any direction other than down pulls the dwarf off his feet and collides with the attacker. A whole line of mining slaves is linked this way, and while this doe slow down the process of mining, it makes it less likely that the dwarves will revolt again. Now after almost six centuries they haven't had any problems in this department. Not for just slaves
In fact the mining pick is so common that most orcs have them at their homes as digging tools and keep them handy for all sorts of things. Their large hands don't work well with the smaller tools the other races were used to having, so when the pick was refigured with its flat head for digging, the orcs grabbed them up. there are even models with a sharp end at the handle for a hole maker.
